The lightning insisted that a heart should yearn,

and that sleeplessness should paint the lover's eyelids with kohl.

So I spent the night with wine of crimson tears,

passed round, and one of my hands for a pillow.

The gray dove laments for me, though untroubled,

and the raincloud's tears pour down, though it is lifeless.

    فَقَد صارَ فيهِ لِلوِرادِ طِرادُ

    My cheek was once a playground for gray steeds;

but now bay steeds give chase across it.

And a night, as when a raven spreads its wing

and ink flows across the face of a scroll—

within it, from lightning's flash—the night a lump of coal—

sparks flew about, and the clouds were flints.

I journeyed through it by night, keeping it alive; the serpent of night-travel would not

die, nor would the dead dawn be brought back.

Resolve turns me, the pupil of an eye,

whose eyelid is the horizon, whose blackness is the dark.

In a wilderness, lightning's heart quivers with dread

there, and the star's eyelid lies sleepless within it.

Far-stretching, with no mounts but the winds

there, and no waterskins but the clouds.

As though I, while the land's depths concealed me,

were love's secret, and the darkness a heart.

I traverse the hollows of the wastes, and dawn is a keen sword,

whose sheath is night, whose baldric the Milky Way.

And in the horizons' hearth lie embers of stars,

covered by ash from the emerging dawn.

And when the moss of night's darkness was rent apart,

and shallow pools of morning's water appeared,

I yearned, while the doves lamented in longing,

and the pitch-black night's mourning garb was torn.

At a time when travel had carried loved ones far away,

and deserts and lands had come between us,

at evening, with no resource like a noble steed,

and no gear like shimmering iron.

When calamity visits, three protect me:

a spearhead, a keen, cutting sword, and a noble steed.

So I spent the night with no bedfellow but the keen sword,

and no bed but the Aʿwajī steed's back,

embracing a friend who never fails me, save that

a baldric lies upon me in place of his arms.
