أَماLo وَمَسيلٍby a watercourse ماثِلِstanding visibly الغَيثِthe rain كَالسَطرِlike a line
كَماas أَترَعَfilled to the brim الساقيthe cupbearer الزُجاجَةَthe bottle بِالخَمرِwith wine
Indeed, by a watercourse where the rain stood like a line of script,
Lo, by a watercourse whose rainwater stands like a line,
as a cupbearer fills a glass to the brim with wine,
as the cupbearer filled the bottle with wine,
لَقَدindeed بِتُّI spent the night بَينَbetween الرَعدِthunder وَالقَطرِand rain أَشتَكيcomplaining
بِسَمعِيَin my hearing مِنfrom وَقرٍdeafness وَظَهرِيَand my back مِنfrom وَقرِa burden
I passed the night amid thunder and rain, voicing my complaint,
indeed, I spent the night between thunder and rain, complaining
with two ears afflicted by deafness and two backs burdened by a load.
of deafness in my ears and a burden on my back.
وَهاand here أَناI مَبلولُsoaked الجَناحِthe wing مِنَfrom الحَياthe rain
يَصوبُpours down وَمذعورُand frightened الفِراخِthe chicks مِنَfrom الوَكرِthe nest
And here I am, my wing drenched by the life-giving rain
And here I am, my wing soaked by the rain
as it pours down—a frightened fledgling away from the nest.
as it pours, and my chicks frightened out of the nest.
وَأَسقَيتُهاand I gave it drink مِنfrom ديمَةٍsteady rain إِثرَafter ديمَةٍsteady rain
فَمالَتso leaned بِهاbecause of it الجُدرانُthe walls سَطراًa line عَلىupon سَطرِa line
And I gave it drink from one steady rain after another,
And I gave it steady rain after steady rain to drink;
so the walls swayed with it, course upon course—
so the walls leaned under it, line upon line.
فَمِنso, from عارِضٍa rain cloud يَسقيgives drink وَمِنand from سَقفِthe roof مَجلِسٍa sitting room
يُغَنّيsings وَمِنand from بَيتٍa house يَميلُsways مِنَfrom السُكرِdrunkenness
with a cloudbank serving drink, and the roof of a hall
So there is a rain cloud giving drink, and a sitting-room roof
singing, and a house reeling from drunkenness.
singing, and a house swaying with drunkenness.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle هَوىfalls رُكنٌa corner فَأَهوىthen brings down فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
لَأَشجىsurely more grief-stricken مِنَthan الخَنساءِal-Khansa تَبكيweeping عَلىover صَخرِSakhr
Whenever a corner collapses, I collapse with it—for surely I
Whenever a corner falls and topples the rest, I
am more grief-stricken than al-Khansāʾ weeping for Ṣakhr.
am surely more grief-stricken than al-Khansa weeping over Sakhr.
