فَاِنثَنى خوطَةً وَناحَ حَمامَه
A singing boy rose and hurried with the wine.
A boy carrying it walked and sang,
Then he swayed like a tender twig and cooed mournfully like a dove.
Then bent down and mourned his pigeon,
وَاِنتَحَيناand we sought مِنfrom طَرفِهِhis gaze وَيَدَيهِand his two hands
وَاِنتَحَينا مِن طَرفِهِ وَيَدَيهِ

وَلَماهُ وَوَجنَتَيهِ مُدامَه
And from his gaze and his hands we sought,
And we shyly turned our eyes from his hands,
And from his dusky lips and his cheeks, wine.
And his cheeks still wet with tears,
وَالدُجىand night’s darkness قَدalready لَوىfurled لِواءَthe banner الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades

وَاِنتَضَتand unsheathed راحَةُthe palm الصَباحِdawn حُسامَهits sword
وَاِنتَضَت راحَةُ الصَباحِ حُسامَه
And night had furled the banner of the Pleiades,
While the night folded its black flag,
And the palm of dawn had unsheathed its sword.
And the breeze of dawn unsheathed its sword,
وَكَأَنَّand as though الغَمامَthe cloud وَالبَرقُwhile the lightning يَهفوflutters

راكِبٌ سَلَّمَ النُعاسَ زِمامَه
And the cloud, while lightning fluttered, seemed
As if the clouds and lightning desired
A rider who had handed his reins to drowsiness.
To mount and take the reins of slumber.
