And many a convivial gathering stirred me,

as wine does—a gathering of young men.

    And the night was radiant-browed,

with short hems to its robes.

So I caught from it a dove,

    white, emerging from a raven.

And the blossoms smiled, and the cheek

    of the rose had its veil lowered;

it grew dewy with the companions’ virtues

there, not with the clouds’ dew.

And both were scattered, just as

they scattered rhymes in their speech.

So it was as though a cup of choice wine

smiled at them, revealing its bubbles.
