وَجَفَتand forsook كَريمَthe gracious جَنابِكَyour presence العُوّادُthe visitors
The noble raised their wailing over you,
The glories raised their wailing for you,
And visitors forsook your gracious presence.
And the generous guests' visits to you dried up.
وَتَكَنَّفَتand spread around شَكواكَlament for you عَنover خَطبٍa calamity دَهىstruck

Lament for you spread all around, over a calamity that struck—
Your complaints enveloped disasters,
At which the mighty mountains shattered their foundations.
Its pillars bowed down to them.

Longing drew forth patience's weapons against it;
The ornaments of patience discharged in it a flood,
Against it I have no weapons but tears.
I have nothing with me except tears as supplies.
لِلَّهِby God أَيُّwhat a خَليلِfriend صِدقٍof sincerity مُخلِصٍfaithful

By God, what a true and faithful friend—
O Allah, which sincere, faithful, devoted friend
With him a pillar fell, and a mainstay bent.
Leaned on and found support?

Fate haltered in him a noble, untamed champion,
Fate condemned him to a difficult, wretched blow,
So he yielded, following along, with death as his rein.
So he yielded and the doves led the way.
جارَيتُهُI raced him طَلقَthe course الحَياةِof life إِلىtoward الرَدىdeath

I raced him over life's course toward death,
His companionship was a loosening of the ties of life to ruin,
And in him a noble steed won the prize of the race.
So the excellent steed of the race contained him.
كُنّاwe were اِصطَحَبناcompanions together وَالتَشاكُلُand likeness نِسبَةٌkinship

We had become companions, with likeness as our kinship,
We used to socialize while resemblance was kinship
Until we were like a shoulder and a sword-belt.
As if we were a shoulder and bicep.
ثُمَّthen اِفتَرَقناwe parted لاnot لِعَودَةِfor a return صُحبَةٍof companionship

Then we parted, with no return to companionship,
Then we parted with no return of companionship
Until we were like a flame and a fire-striker.
As if we were a flame and flint.

O you far away, unable to make yourself heard,
O you who are distant and cannot hear!
Dweller in graves, with barriers between us:
Between us lies the stillness of graves.

What does the precious soul do when
What does the precious soul do when
Souls and bodies forsake one another?
Souls and bodies shun each other?

The veil over death's secret has been lifted for you;
The veil was lifted before you about the secret of ruin
Then answer with what may moisten the hearts.
So answer with what melts the livers.
فَوَراءَfor behind سِترِthe veil اللَيلِof night مُضطَرِمُburning الحَشاin the entrails

For behind night's veil is one whose entrails burn;
Behind the veil of night with burning darkness
No bed there lies still beneath him.
In which no bedstead can settle.

He knew sorrow only on the day you died,
Only on the day of your death I realized what sorrow is
As though your death were sorrow's birth.
As if your death was the birth of sorrow.

And glory enough for him to say, while the darkness
And it was enough glory for him to say while in darkness
Has a dawn sustained by his tears:
A torrent for him from his tears supplies.
حَتّامَhow long أَندُبُshall I lament صاحِباًa companion وَشَبيبَةًand youth

"How long shall I lament a companion and youth,
My eyes shall weep over a companion and youth
With an eye overflowing or a heart yearning?
So an eye overflows or a heart grieves.

Desist: that friend will not return
Restrain yourself, for neither that friend comes
Ever, nor will that youth be restored.
Nor does that youth return.
فَقُصارُfor the end مُجتَمِعُof the gathering الأَصاحِبِof friends فِرقَةٌseparation

For the end of a gathering of friends is separation,
The gathering of companions is separation in brevity
And the lights of youth end in ashes."
And the radiance of youth is ashes.

Why seek solace, when a companion has departed?
Why persist when a companion has borne
His dwelling lies far away, and his absence is long.
A home from which he is exiled and remote?
أَتبَعتُهُI sent after him قَلباًa heart لَهُfor it مِنfrom لَوعَةٍanguish

I sent my heart after him, with anguish
I followed him with a heart full of anguish
For provisions, and an overflowing eye for a waterskin.
Provisions and an eye pouring supplies.

A peerless man, for whom the assembly's foremost place smiled
So the breast of the loved one smiled from it
In delight in him, and his peers thrilled.
Agitated and the equals shook.
وَأَخٌand a brother لِوُدٍّthrough affection لاnot أَخٌa brother لِوِلادَةٍby birth

A brother through affection, not a brother by birth;
A brother through affection not brotherhood
And affection binds more closely than kinship by birth.
And dearer than descendants through birth.

The stupor of a sleep that never lifts has seized him,
The swoon of a sleep that does not dissipate enveloped him
Though every eye has sleep and wakefulness.
And for every eye there is a sleep and pillow.

I bade him farewell as one grief-stricken, with no
I bid him farewell, gloomy, with no
Appointed meeting save at the Resurrection.
Meeting again, just the farewell.

And I shook my hand free of him, a treasure jealously prized,
And I released my hand from him with clinging sorrow
For whom hearts and arms were shattered.
With which livers and joints crumbled.

And I left him, while glory rubbed its nose in dust,
And I left him with glory subduing his unwillingness
Reclining where the soil is his pillow,
Using the soil as pillow and mattress.

In an abode where Jurhum had settled before him,
In a land his noble ancestors settled before him
And to which Iram and 'Ad had moved.
And caravans turned towards him and returned.

Nations that choked the open space, whom
Nations with which space was congested, their abundance
Death's hand folded like a cloak, and they perished.
Was covered by the palm of ruin and perished.

They ruled and led; then their multitude dissolved
They dominated and led then their assembled multitudes
Into solitude, as though they had never led.
Departed from glory as if they never dominated.

Builders and buildings vanished as the nights passed,
The builders have perished over nights and buildings
And the noble and the base followed one another.
And glories and rubbish succeeded each other.

How often they repelled foes and guarded the domain
And perhaps they sacrificed and strived to protect
Of a king who fell—as though they had never guarded it.
A king's sanctuary as if they never strived.

Listen long: do you hear any speech?
Then lament long - do you understand any language?
And look carefully: do you see what they built?
And observe closely - do you see what they built?

Throngs so vast that pebbles could be counted by them,
Groups that pebbles are counted due to their multitude
And often numbers themselves were exhausted by them.
And sometimes numbers were eliminated by them.

They were swept away—every caravan has a driver—
I bewail them and time controlled each group's journey,
By Time, singing their mounts onward and leading them.
An era that guided their mounts and herded them.

And it cast Rabi'ah into obscurity, though only
It cast Rabee'ah with inertia though
Through 'Abd Allah among them had they attained eminence.
With Abdullah among them they dominated.

Through a radiant man, bright of brow, as though he were
With the bright, radiant-faced Ağar
A blazing star beneath the dense darkness.
As if beneath his dark hair a planet shone.

Smiling with joyful animation, as though he were
Smiling in a tremor as if he were
A swaying bough whose blossoms had burst open.
A blossoming branch whose light kindled wicks.

Through him humility trod al-Simak in its loftiness,
Walking humbly raised him in rank
As though his descent to Tihamah were ascent to Najd.
As if his humility were glory.

Death set down his saddle in a dwelling
The doves alighted in an abode
Where fathers and forefathers had alighted.
Where his ancestors and forefathers settled.

A sigh rises over it, and an eye sheds tears,
A soul rises and an eyelid waters
So its soil is at times fanned and abundantly watered.
So its soil is sometimes fertile, sometimes barren.

So I stood lamenting his decayed remains,
I stood there eulogizing him, collapsed in ruin,
Which feel nothing—and can lifeless matter feel?
Does he sense, does inanimate matter sense?

Decay's hand erases the page of his cheeks
The hand of time pointlessly erases his tablet
In vain, while the ages fold away his memory.
As ages fold away his mention.

A dwelling is empty of him, despite glory,
Despite the glory his abode is empty
Where the noble have filled their eyes with tears for him.
Which glories have filled with their wailing.

Anguish for him twisted his faithful friends' ribs,
Sincere souls are tormented with anguish over him
And often even his enviers softened for him.
And sometimes even the envious are compassionate.

Adorned with tears like jewelry whenever
Necks were stripped of their ornaments for him,
His glories failed to adorn him.

It whitens as it is sealed, and darkens with desolation,
Gleaming associated and darkened isolated
As though that whiteness were mourning garb.
As if that gleam were mourning.

So a raincloud wept for you, O noble grave,
An elegist from a noble grave laments you
Clamorous, its wailing cry a thunderclap.
Whose wailing for you rumbles.

Consolation was slaughtered over it, but no
Condolences were given for him, no camels slaughtered
Camels were slaughtered there, nor steeds hamstrung over it.
And no steeds hamstrung in grief for him.

And the downpour of mercy inundated
Water-seekers and pasture-seekers throng your sides.
Your sides, frequented by visitors and pilgrims.

Lightning flashes flicker at its two sides, as though
Lightning flashes by his sides as if
Bay horses had been hamstrung by them over you.
Horses seeking you were hamstrung.

By the fragrance of your soil, what a verse of poetry—
With the goodness of your soil, which verse of elegy
If only that verse could be repeated!
If that verse could be repeated!

No eye meets with sleep over it
No eye meets another in slumber upon it at night
At night, nor a side with bedding beside it.
No side or pillow meets it.
وَاللَيلُand the night فُسطاطٌa tent هُناكَthere مُطَنَّبٌstretched on ropes
ضُرِبَتwere driven in لَهُfor it مِنof أَنجُمٍstars أَوتادُpegs
And night is a tent stretched out there,
The night there is a pavilion propped
With pegs of stars driven in for it.
With stakes of stars driven in.
وَكَفىand would suffice مَعاداًas a meeting-place لِلتَلاقيfor reunion فيin الكَرىsleep
لَوif only كانَwere to يَسمَحُbe generous بِالخَيالِwith a dream-image رُقادُslumber
And sleep would suffice as a place to meet again,
And it would suffice as a meeting place in the grave
If only slumber would grant the dream-image.
If imagination allowed one to settle there.
