أَلاLo! طَمَّoverflowed بَحرُa sea أَتِيٍّof an oncoming flood طَماrose high
وَأَجرىand set flowing كَفَّيthe two palms of سَماءٍa sky تَجودgives freely
Lo, a sea of oncoming flood overflowed and rose high,
Has not the sea of destruction raged,
And set flowing the two palms of a sky that gives freely.
And the generous heavens poured down their bounty,
فَأَهوَتso sank down تَخُرُّfalling هُناكَthere البُنىthe buildings
كَماas تَتَلَقّىreceive المُلوكُthe kings الوُفودthe delegations
So there the buildings sank down and fell,
To lay low there many a noble mansion,
As kings receive delegations.
As kings receive the homage of men!
وَباتَتand they spent the night كَأَنَّas though عَلَيهاupon them صَلاةًprayer
فَبَعضٌso some رُكوعٌbowing وَبَعضٌand some سُجودprostration
And they spent the night as though obliged to pray:
Their night became as though there were on them
Some bowing, and some prostrate.
Some prostrate, some in worship bending low.
