وَاِستَشعَروا النَصرَ العَزيزَ سِلاحا
They spurred the steeds to combat in the morning.
The steeds raced to battle at dawn
And wore mighty victory as their weapon.
And felt the sweetness of mighty triumph in their weapons
وَاِستَقبَلواand they faced أُفُقَthe horizon of الشَمالِthe north بِجَحفَلٍwith a mighty host

And faced the northern horizon with a mighty host,
And faced the northern horizon with an army
Which spread a wing of battle-dust over the north.
That spread darkness over the north on wings

Within its bounds the trees of spears swayed,
The spear-wood groaned throughout its borders
And the water of steel ran through it, streaming forth.
And the water of iron flowed freely in it

From it a cloud of might rained upon the non-Arabs;
It rained destruction on the enemy from a raging storm
Steel flashed at its two sides and shone.
The iron flashed lightning on both sides

Until, when the Indian-steel sword was chipped by a glancing blow,
Until Al-Muhannad was broken into pieces
And the stout spear's head shattered and fell,
And the chest of Al-Samhari collapsed and fell

Their shoulders piled the enemies in heaps
That it laid them prostrate upon the plains.

Slain where the rain-clouds' tears poured forth—not
There were corpses where the tear of mourning was shed
Out of pity; the doves joined their mourning and lamented.
And the turtledove rejoiced with glad cries

The pages of their faces were already dust-covered,
Pages made from their faces were torn
And the swords began tearing them apart with wounds.
By swords that slashed them with wounds

So, had you looked, you would have seen nothing but
If you had looked you would have seen naught
An arrow chipped in a slain man who had fallen.
But arrows conversationally lodged in the fallen dead

Thus places of slaughter guarded the Muslims' sanctuary,
Graves protected the sanctity of the Muslims
Leaving the polytheists' sanctuary open to violation,
Leaving the pagans' women free for all

The courtyards of its homes darkened with desolation,
Filling the courtyards of homes with darkness
The forecourts of its dwellings filled with lamentation.
And houses' patios resounding with wailing

Eagles swooped down upon the guts of the foe
An appointed fate upon the enemy's lifeblood.
Freely at the enemy's soft bellies pecking

They filled the ribs of night with the flickering of tongues
That streamed over its flanks as white gleams.
Darting over its shoulders sparks aflashing

The steeds fancied as though they were wearing
The flanks of every courser had drunk wine.
Mantles fringed with pleasure on every edge

Each with a victorious banner: when it journeys by night,
Whenever a horseman of bright banners rode forth
The night-journey's outcome appears before it, and it rejoices.
The heels of riding put comfort behind

His face laughed from the glow of youth
That streams down, while it frolics at the reins in high spirits.
As pleasure frolicked on the bridle

It travels by night with a radiant rider; no dread grows dark
He proceeded serenely, whatever alarm dimmed his vision
Without his face sparkling like a lamp.
His face shone like a bright lantern

And he raised the dust-cloud above them as a canopy,
He stirred up dust storms over them completely
And passed goblets of death around among them.
And drove destruction among them in cups

Gamesters of war: whenever the spears interlocked,
Warriors whose hands when the spears mixed
They wielded only lances as their gaming arrows.
Used only the spears for striking fire

They overtopped the long spears in stature, as though
They stretched out to high places far and wide
The hand of battle had planted them as lances.
As though the hand of fate had planted them as spears

Dew shaken in arousal streamed from every hill
His flanks with delight, and he overflowed with bounty.
Of twisted peaks in generous flow

Battle bloodied his claw of spears,
The encounter reddened victory for the spears
Sharp-edged, and spread a wing from his banner.
Striking in profusion and the banners spreading wide

So the night of calamity lifted from the horizon of guidance,
The night of trials drew away from the horizon of guidance
And manifest victory rose as morning.
And clear triumph appeared in the dawn
