وَأَغَرَّand a radiant-faced man كادَalmost لَطافَةًin gracefulness وَطَلاقَةًand cheerfulness
يَنسابُhe flows ماءًas water بَينَناamong us مَسكوباpoured out
And a radiant man, so graceful and cheerful he almost
He captivated with his subtlety and fluency,
flowed among us as water poured out;
Flowing between us like water poured out.
وَسنانَdrowsy-eyed يُدرِكُhe reaches كُلَّevery قَلبٍheart طالِباًas a seeker
وَيَفوتُand he eludes كُلَّevery مُتَيَّمٍlovesick lover مَطلوباwhen sought
Drowsy-eyed, he wins every heart he seeks,
Teeth that reach every desiring heart,
yet eludes every lovesick lover who seeks him.
And elude every enamored pursuer.
قَدindeed قامَhe rose فيat صَدرِthe head of النَدامىthe drinking companions فَاِستَوىthen he stood upright
فَحَسِبتُهُso I thought him أَلِفاًan alif بِهِin it مَكتوباwritten
He rose at the head of the drinking companions and stood upright,
He stood erect in the breasts of the regretful,
so I thought him an alif written there.
So I reckoned him a thousand times inscribed.
وَأَكَبَّand he bent over يَشرَبُهاhe drinks it وَتَشرَبُand it drinks ذِهنَهُhis mind
فَرَأَيتُso I saw مِنهُin him شارِباًa drinker مَشروباbeing drunk up
And he bent over to drink it, while it drank up his mind,
He leaned over to drink it, and it drank his mind,
so I saw in him a drinker himself drunk up.
So I saw him drinking, drunk.

Wine cooled by the north wind: while in his palm it appears
Held in his palm could be seen
as water, in his cheek it appears as a blaze.
Water, and in his cheek, passion aflame.
