حَلّى بِها العِقدُ شَرَّ ماحَلى
Lo, the pearls wept upon a bejeweled woman;
The tear shed over a cheek
In her, the necklace adorned the worst it ever adorned.
Adorning it the necklace did at its worst adorn
يَرىit sees بِهاin her ماwhat يَمُرُّtastes bitter مِنof حَلَقٍḥalaq, a bitter plant
يَرى بِها ما يَمُرُّ مِن حَلَقٍ

مُخَبَّأً تَحتَ مَنظَرِ الجُلى
It sees in her the bitterness of ḥalaq,
Sees through it what passes of a throat
Hidden beneath a glittering appearance.
Hidden under the sight of the mantle
قَدindeed راقَpleased مَرأىًto behold وَساءَand was foul مُختَبَراًwhen tested
قَد راقَ مَرأىً وَساءَ مُختَبَراً
فَهَلso, could it be تُرىdo you think أَثمَرَتbore fruit بِهاupon her دِفلىan oleander
فَهَل تُرى أَثمَرَت بِها دِفلى
It pleased the eye, but proved foul when tested;
It has shed openly and evilly tested
So has an oleander, do you think, borne fruit upon her?
Did it thus bear any fruit?
