تَقَبَّلِaccept المُهرَthe colt مِنfrom أَخيa brother of ثِقَةٍtrustworthiness
أَرسَلَsent ريحاًa wind بِهِin it إِلىto مَطَرِrain
Accept the colt from a trustworthy brother,
Accept the gift from my trusted brother
who sent, in it, a wind to the rain.
Who sent a breeze with it to the rain
مُشتَمِلاًcloaked بِالظَلامِin darkness مِنof شِيَةٍa coat color
لَمdid not يَشتَمِلenfold لَيلُهاits night عَلىupon سَحَرِa dawn
It is cloaked in the darkness of a coat
Enveloped in the darkness of modesty
whose night enfolded no dawn.
Its night did not contain any magic
مُنتَسِباًtracing kinship لَونُهُits color وَغُرَّتُهُand its brow
إِلىto سَوادِthe blackness of الفُؤادِthe heart وَالبَصَرِand the eye
Its color and brow trace their kinship
Its color and radiance attributed
to the heart's dark core and the eye's pupil.
To the darkness of my heart and eyesight
تَحسِبُهُyou think it مِنfrom عُلاكَyour eminence مُستَرِقاًhaving stolen
بَهجَةَthe beauty of مَرأىappearance وَحُسنَand excellence of مُختَبَرِproven mettle
You would think it had stolen from your eminence
You'd think it stole from your beauty
beauty of appearance and excellence when tried.
The joy of seeing and trying beauty
حَنَّit yearned إِلىfor راحَةٍa palm تَفيضُoverflows with نَدىًdew
فَمالَso leaned ظِلٌّa shadow بِهِin it عَلىover نَهرِa river
It yearned for a palm overflowing with dew,
It inclined towards a rest that overflows with dew
so, in it, a shadow leaned over a river.
So a shadow leaned over a river through it
تَرىyou see بِهِin it وَالنَشاطُwhile vigor يُلهِبُهُsets it aflame
ماشِئتَwhatever you wish مِنof فَحمَةٍcoal وَمِنand of شَرَرِsparks
You see in it, as vigor sets it aflame,
You see in it, and vitality ignites it
whatever you wish of coal and sparks.
Whatever you wish of embers and sparks
لَوif حَمَلَbore اللَيلُthe night حُسنَthe beauty of دُهمَتِهِits blackness
أَمتَعَwould delight طَرفَthe eye of المُحِبِّthe lover بِالسَهَرِwith wakefulness
If night bore the beauty of its blackness,
If the night carried the beauty of its darkness
it would make wakefulness a delight to the lover's eye.
It would entertain the lover's gaze and insomnia
أَحمىsafer مِنَthan النَجمِthe star يَومَon a day of مَعرَكَةٍbattle
ظَهراًin its back وَأَجرىand swifter بِهِon it مِنَthan القَدَرِfate
Safer than a star on a day of battle
Hotter than a star on the day of battle
is its back, and on it one is swifter than fate.
A back that makes fate run its course
اِسوَدَّit became black وَاِبيَضَّand became white فِعلُهُits conduct كَرَماًthrough nobility
فَاِلتَفَتَso turned الحُسنُbeauty فيهِin it عَنaway from حَوَرِblack-and-white eye contrast
It is black, yet its conduct is white with nobility,
It blackened and whitened, its action nobly
so beauty in it turned away from the charm of black-and-white eyes.
So beauty in it averted from nymphs
كَأَنَّهُas though it وَالنُفوسُwhile souls تَعشَقُهُadore it
مُرَكَّبٌcomposed مِنof مَحاسِنِthe beauties of الصُوَرِforms
It is as though, while souls adore it,
It's as if it and souls are in love with it
it were composed of the beauties of every form.
Composed of the beauties of forms
فَاِزدَدso increase سَناin radiance بَهجَةٍof beauty بِدُهمَتِهِthrough its blackness
فَاللَيلُfor night أَذكىmore illuminating لِغُرَّةِfor the bright face of القَمَرِthe moon
So grow in radiant splendor through its blackness,
So its darkness increased in splendor
for night lends greater radiance to the moon's bright face.
For the night is more eloquent than the moon's radiance
وَمِثلُand the like of شُكريmy gratitude عَلىfor تَقَبَّلِهِaccepting it
يَجمَعُunites بَينَbetween النَسيمِthe breeze وَالزَهرِand the blossoms
And gratitude like mine for your accepting it
And my gratitude for accepting it
unites the breeze and the blossoms.
Combines the breeze and the flower
