You attained through strength, while others attained through stratagems.

So rule all humankind, deserving it, and surpass them.

Decree for your age whatever you choose; it will follow

the ways of one who hears the decree and obeys.

You have always savored forgiveness while holding power,

until your kindness was sought through committing faults.

These virtues—we have never known their like.

People erred when they said, 'Excellence belongs to the ancients.'

How can this hold true by their own reasoning,

when the Seal of the Messengers became the best of creation?

You have sent our eyes roaming through every marvel

that never crossed their minds or stirred within them.

If something fine comes from the deeds of some of them,

good fortune may indeed arise even from Saturn.

God bless the judgment of humankind's imam—how it traveled by night

to you while the hour was dark, its pathways unlit.

He found the vizierate had never been entrusted to a pillar of strength,

even for a day, nor was any glance of the eye free from flaws.

So he nurtured her toward her worthy match in you, dowering her with

a mature man's counsels joined to a young man's resolve.

Whenever enemies grew insolent, he kept clothing her

in judgment that blunts the edge of grave calamity.

You drove Qurra from the abode of repose through

the sound judgment and action you brought to bear.

They swerved from truth, so against them you summoned

horsemen neither unsteady in the saddle nor unarmed.

Had the neighing of the horses beneath them not betrayed them,

they would have been taken for midmorning suns arriving upon peaks.

Guiding them, while night's deep shadows lay dark,

was the gleam of spearheads on slender Khatti lances.

You made them, thirsty, lap the blood of jugular veins,

and gave them gush after gush, at their first draught and their next.

    وَغَيرُ بِدعٍ تَثَنّي الشارِبِ الثَمِلِ

    Then, when they grew drunk, they swayed their flanks;

and a drunken drinker's swaying is nothing strange.

You shone as you left the sun pale,

as though it had been clad in dusky robes.

Your battle-dust became kohl upon its eyelids,

though we have never known the sun's eyelid to bear kohl.

Resolves from the West, of which warnings were exchanged

by the people of the two Iraqs, before those of plain and mountain.

Tughlubak indeed showed, in fearing them,

judgment far removed from blame and folly.

He came to think dawn's radiance came from blades

unsheathed, and that night's stars came from spears.

You left his limbs splitting from dread,

in terror, and his ribs breaking apart from fright.

So do not blame him if he does not complain of his ailment:

the dead do not complain of fresh afflictions.

The pages of sovereignty have now grown radiant,

and the hand of dynasties has clasped yours in homage.

So judge your undertakings by your own good fortune,

and go beyond predictions based on Gemini and Aries.

For if the seven luminaries attained their wishes,

they would become servants among these servants.

Through the perfect, peerless one, Time has humbled itself before us,

and has come to be called a timid weakling.

His illustrious forebears surpassed all humankind,

and through them glory's tether was firmly twisted.

They departed, but high glory made their memory deathless,

as though their persons had never vanished from among humankind:

those who ruled by the judgments contained in sacred law,

and championed it over other faiths and creeds.

No burning thirst remained in the liver of beneficence,

thanks to them, nor any bend in glory's spear-shaft.

And men enriched by loftiness, whose dust

has darkened lips through dust-rubbing and kisses.

Listen to Time: you will hear it say in delight,

'This is Ali's ally, the chosen one, son of Ali.'

O you who hear the voice of earth's people from afar,

yet hear no whispered blame amid reproach.

You have saved high glory's lifeblood through the bounty of a hand

dyed with the blood of drought and avarice.

I thirst to sip from it one day, but am turned

away from it by the intervening torrent of the downpouring cloud.

These budding maidens have come to you, swearing

that they have never been led to a husband, nor been touched.

I have guarded them from every suitor,

as secluded ladies are guarded by canopies.

Were it not for you, their bosoms would never have been adorned,

nor would Time have stripped away their robe of unadornment.

If my person is absent from this place, I have nonetheless

kept it company with pure expectation and hope.

Then be gracious and lessen the favors you have bestowed:

too much light dazzles the eyes' vision.

And spare the life of a servant whose master you have become,

for many a death has been caused by too much joy.

And let the nights indeed grant your enviers respite, for already

they have made them drink molten dross and pus, at leisure.

Wear out Time with undiminishing might,

and lordship joined to the forelocks of the stars.
