They have, as they traverse the deserts,

only to quicken their amble and gallop.

Yet the persistent man summoned them,

and they plunged headlong across the wilderness.

They disowned Shadqam and dismissed Jadil,

    speaking for the dust-scattering winds.

They sprang forth like bows—rather, like arrows

that bows had brought to their targets.

Where hooves cannot reach at a gallop,

after they have reached it on padded feet.

Seven nights had wrought upon them

what seven lean years would do.

After their thirst they reached Egypt's Nile,

before the scouts and forerunners reached the water.

When, in the pasture of honor and wealth, they scorned

the grazing of tannum and khidhraf.

And they knelt in a realm where one rose to might

and shielded them from calamity—an excellent protector!—

its pride and the son of its pride, the wellspring of nobility,

lord of eminence, lifelong companion of chastity.

Noble in ancestry, soul, and resolve,

    in generous deeds and qualities.

Possessor of broad blades that refuse scabbards as a resting place,

and guest-feasts in great bowls, not small dishes.

Thus my expectations were sheltered from every falsehood,

since they sought refuge with the noblest of nobles.

And I praised the age beside a magnanimous lord

whose court never lacks a thousand petitioners.

They never faulted life beneath his shade in winter quarters,

nor in spring quarters, nor in summer quarters.

So I forgot every bestower of kindness

beside a lord whose approaches are smooth.

His petitioner is a benefactor; his hopeful a source of hope,

and his guests have guests of their own.

He exhausts ancestral wealth in the pursuit of praise,

with the devastation of al-Jahhaf's onslaught.

He is never free of generosity while awake,

and it visits him by night while he sleeps.

A benefactor, from whom reproaches stand as distant

as his promise stands from breach.

O you with few peers in glory's ranks,

so peerless, and giver of thousands!

How many a brother in this world surpassed his brother

through deeds that make their disparity plain!

Just as Abd Shams missed the praise

won by Hashim, son of Abd Manaf,

through deeds that gave him his name, eclipsing

the name of Amr, though Amr was not obscure.

Everyone circled the door of your house, hoping

for what pilgrims hope for during their circumambulation.

Where the pasture of promises is not barren,

nor the spring meadow of wishes desolate.

You are mankind's protection; if you departed—

never!—they would be repulsed, beyond dispute.

Has a bird ever lost its primary feathers

without the weakness of its secondary feathers becoming clear?

And the Lord of mankind has swords among you

that have no need of sharpening.

They guarded the faith through rescue and force,

when it had stood exposed to destruction.

    Leaps into combat with enemies,

    and steadfastness beneath blood-streaming spears.

And tomorrow mankind will be recognized by their marks

by men from among you upon the Heights.

You have taken the foremost seats in pride's assemblies,

while the fringes suffice the noble.

And whenever praise spreads among people,

you alone win an ample share.

Could one offering deferred gifts, canceled and forgotten, match a noble

and more generous man who buys praise with gifts in advance?

Yours of it is many times what a raid seizes

    after relentless persistence and importunity.

And theirs of it is what the thief leaves

    for the diviner after confession.

Or what your gifts left of your wealth

when you were called the spendthrift.

So stand alone in eminence, son of Abu Ya'la,

as the sky stands alone in its height.

Unlike folk so often called upon for worthy deeds,

who referred the matter to their ancestors.

They falsely inscribed in the pages of pride

a reckoning that declines with their descendants.

Whoever had his house among the Pleiades,

yet through him it came to swim, not stay afloat—

it is a Bedouin dwelling, with no remaining

landmark except its trench and hearthstones.

    هَل يُحِسُّ الوَشيجُ عَضَّ الثِقافِ

    They never feel disgrace;

does spear-wood feel the straightening clamp's bite?

These people strayed, but you found the way; your tracks

in noble deeds follow no others.

You never trained your hopefuls on delay's racecourse,

nor accepted bare sufficiency for their wishes.

Generous deeds for which you were accused of injustice,

though you are the wellspring of fairness.

    وَكَذا الدَهرُ يَبتَلي وَيُعافي

    I once hoped in one from whom no hope could come;

and thus time afflicts and grants relief.

    وَإِذا أَعوَزَ الزَمانُ فَعافي

    And so I told my desires, 'Be restrained;

when time grows poor, turn away.'

And my admission of ignorance is an excuse; long ago

    wrongdoing was effaced by confession.

My hopes have attained their desire with you,

and time has found itself unable to thwart me.

Just as death gains hold of a giver of life,

not as a sick man finds a healer.

And you graciously acquired my praise

    through gifts abundant in kindness,

ranging from bounty that fills the penniless man's hand

to fragrance for the nose-tip of the one who scents it.

They reached me before I asked, and followed in succession,

    with kindness added to kindness.
