No lofty height of glory can find refuge from you,

since these virtues joined you in winning them.

People have pursued this path, seeking

your reach for ages, but their striving failed.

So let them despair of your glories, which dazzle—

this, though aspirations have not reached their furthest limits.

Whenever your deeds raise you to a station

that cannot be climbed, your enviers' pain increases.

You laid upon their necks favors they cannot bear,

when your surpassing achievement made their excuse clear.

It left the people's ambitions short of what you attained,

so their cares subsided after grievous torment.

You have built for them, O succor of the Muslims,

through diligence and good fortune, a glory that cannot fall.

Every dwelling they inhabit is a sanctuary,

and all their months, through that safety, are sacred.

No seeker of bounty has lacked abundant kindness—

no indeed, nor any sinner gracious pardon.

    وَالذَنبُ مُغتَفَرٌ وَالجَورُ مُنصَرِمُ

    Security, justice, and pardon—wealth is a matter of eagerness;

sin is forgiven, and injustice has ended.

Since you gained power, falsehood's ranks have been sundered

in every land, while truth's ranks are united.

The kings of the earth have written to you, desiring

what you possess, their utmost request being peace.

    قَد يَبذُلُ الخَوفُ ما لا يَبذُلُ الكَرَمُ

    Each pays you tribute out of dread;

fear may give what generosity will not.

They feared your might: from their wealth come precious gifts

to the imam, and from their children come attendants.

Out of awe of you—had it come before the Messenger

to Mecca's heart, no idol would have been worshipped there.

That awe was feared; once it shattered solid lances, it bridled

every enemy nose that would not take a bridle.

Now he thrusts straight ahead as he advances,

who once thrust sideways while fleeing.

You reunited what they scattered of this faith's fellowship,

when you scattered what they assembled of tyranny.

Even if Amr taught them his stratagems,

their deceit would not free them from terror's captivity.

You singled out no enemy rather than his fellow

except so that some of their people might warn the others.

Fighting to defend rights whose protection is honor,

and pardoning sins whose concealment is generosity,

out of mercy whose tender impulses have so often drawn near

to your overflowing bounty those whom kinship did not draw near.

    فَمُذ عَنَوا بَذَلَ الإِنعامَ مُنتَقِمُ

    When they rebelled, the giver withheld his favors;

once they submitted, the avenger lavished favors.

Keen resolves, preceded by no apprehension,

and copious favors, followed by no regret.

The humbled Ibn Badis and his family

are only seekers of the impossible whose hopes proved false.

How far truth is from a belief belied

by blue spearheads and keen Indian blades!

    جارُ الذَليلِ عَلى العِلّاتِ مُهتَضَمُ

    He dashed Ibn Habib's hopes through deceit, and he faltered;

an abased man's protégé is oppressed, whatever the circumstances.

Until he made unwillingly for you, carried along

by a lean-bellied craft that knew neither fatigue nor weariness.

    وَيُفرَجُ المَوجُ عَنهُ وَهوَ يَلتَطِمُ

    The wind drives it urgently, yet it outruns the wind;

the waves part around it while clashing together.

He sought an ally whose speech was falsehood

only to be mounted on a camel of towering build,

looking down upon the armies—not as an honor.

I have never before seen an elevation that disgraces.

He sees and hears things for which his eyes

and ears would be better served by blindness and deafness.

I do not see you content with what has happened

    until all the Hilaliyyun perish,

as al-Sulayhi did at al-Jayshan, advancing

with your two banners, his footing never faltering,

when he watered the earth with a downpour of their blood

whose like the steady rains cannot claim in their outpouring.

The day the debt of a faith you champion was exacted

by blades whose watering places are necks and crowns.

Battles through which truth clothed itself in youth,

after it was said that old age had destroyed it.

For Ibn Badis, a day at your hands is awaited

by bright blades, unless sickness wears him away.

His endurance delights him; he has withdrawn for refuge—

if only Sabra were a refuge from this resolve!

His envoy headed for Baghdad seeking aid,

that bearer of humiliation, a stain upon his rule.

He did not find with him what his master desired,

so he compensated him with gifts whose possession was nothing.

He returned concealed beneath night's darkness,

until the king of the Romans revealed their secret,

seeking your favor by breaking his pledge of protection.

By my life, pledges are broken to earn your favor.

He sought aid from a distant man whose hand fell short

of aiding someone whose home lay near his own.

The man whose father is Ali is not rivaled

for Ahmad's inheritance by a usurper whose uncle is Qutham.

A time has passed in which error grew mighty,

and the family of God's Messenger lost their due.

Had you governed their affairs in time's earliest days,

no oppressor would have wronged al-Zahra's offspring.

Nor would the vicissitudes of days have assailed them,

with falsehood propped up and truth obscured.

Events that unjustly bequeathed to Marwan

a caliphate that al-Hakam had not left him,

then returned with the sons of al-Abbas, subduing

the sons of Umayya until their rule vanished.

Until, when they desisted from their injustice, they bound

with the trustworthy one a bond that cannot be broken.

And God strengthened, through the man of blessed omen,

this imam; the nations have submitted to him.

Through one who, though apart from battle, achieves

what no other gains even when intent upon it.

flowing, and wisdom is kindled from his words.

When its lawgiver unsheathed you to defend the faith,

you were the keen sword by which diseases are cut away.

resolve, not girths, binds them on the day of terror.

what, then, is expected of them when the hour of assault arrives?

A zeal that wore out the ashwood spears, upheld

by piety from which doubt and delusion have vanished.

Through it you rise above ministers of whom you are lord,

as chosen companions have risen, with you their crown.

    فَما بَنى مِثلَهُ عادٌ وَلا إِرَمُ

    It is the edifice whose pillars rise high;

neither Ad nor Iram built its like.

And the noble deeds through which you pursue a generosity

in which neither Hatim nor Harim has any share.

In hospitality, the giver of high-humped, ten-month-pregnant camels is surpassed

by one whose bounty is splendid blessings, not livestock.

If Hashim is ever set aside, then no Arabs

nor non-Arabs approach the Azd in glory.

They are those whose deeds have spread for them

virtues whose like the ancients could not achieve.

And you—truth is manifest, not concealed—

are the highest branch through which the ancestral trunks have grown tall.

Of a people known for giving when asked,

for decisive speech when they speak, and justice when they judge.

Lords of mantles that injustice never accompanies

even for a day, and of mantles through which darkness is dispelled.

and keen blades by which many fearless warriors were terrified.

A people who won high honor during their lifetimes,

multiplied many times through you while they lie as decayed bones.

And your two sons after you are the best endowed of all people

in their share whenever supreme glory is apportioned.

You have possessed glory since you first existed; your young one

occupies its highest peaks before reaching manhood.

Blessed is God, Lord of creation, who created you

from a substance too exalted for any price to be found for it.

I strove for glory along paths where I lost my way,

when glory lay unmarked, without a guidepost.

Here I am today, unwilling to accept obscurity, and I have

this standing, a highway leading to my renown.

    يُخبِركَ أَنّي لِسانٌ وَالزَمانُ فَمُ

    Ask your abundant knowledge about me, for it knows me;

it will tell you that I am a tongue, and time a mouth.

How can I overlook the treachery of my days?

How, when you are master over the days?

I did not seek wealth until you spread it to all,

and with one like you, destitution was of little consequence.

Glory guarded itself until its seeker said,

Has time killed it, or are its mothers barren?

I show my enemies an appearance of prosperity; their eyes

take it in, but then their hearts reject it.

Like a man who dyes his hair, while the nights never relent,

revealing the gray his katam dye conceals.

Mark me with the brand of your bounty, which has flooded

others; the days do not forget those you brand.

I seek to leave Damascus, but am drawn back

by the ardent hearts there, not its chilly water.

Wherever I am, all my life I string

for the lord of glories necklaces whose pearls are words.

I withdraw when my services have ended, gratefully received,

for a while, and draw near when services arise.

Praise God for your age—how complete its beauties!

How many waking moments in it we thought were dreams!

May you remain, as long as the days recur, winning

the thanks of mankind; with you, success is a prize to be won.

And may it never be without you, while dawn dispels the darkness—

the age whose people's sorrows have been lifted through you.
