He guided whoever sought him to glory,

so none might hope to rival him in any virtue.

Imagination cannot keep pace along the path

you pursue; time itself is too narrow to contain you.

So people acknowledged you willingly; even if

the morning light were resisted, it could not be driven back.

Thus safety and justice, O bestower of them both

upon all humankind, have been united

in blood you shed in pursuit of the

    reward, and other blood you spared out of piety;

and falsehood that, in your time, remained

refuted, and right restored by your judgment.

Virtues made famous throughout the lands,

until those who saw and those who heard were alike.

You warded off calamities: had they descended

one day upon a lofty mountain, it would have split apart.

    بِها رَدَعتَ الزَمانَ فَاِرتَدَعا

    Fear of your onslaughts thus made the fearful safe;

with them you checked Time, and it desisted.

You bridled it as you would a stubborn beast; and had you

given it its own rein, it would have grazed at will.

Until it came forward submissive—and no wonder:

what mighty one has not bowed before you?

And what land have you protected that was then violated?

And what thing have you desired that proved unattainable?

And what offender, dogged by repeated stumbling,

has not heard your gracious pardon say, 'Rise again'?

O you—all the kings of the age, without exception,

have gathered in throngs around your palace.

Those seeking favor have found no other recourse

than you, nor those who fear you any escape.

Thus, among all the tribes spread your

bounty, until you bound them to yourself as followers.

And in the gardens of your bounty they made a summer

retreat, a winter home for themselves, and a spring abode.

Indeed, the Commander of the Armies is he who scaled the

heights of glory and came to look down upon it.

He judged by the Book's decree, following its guidance,

and manifested miracles, creating what was new.

If those attending his court intercede,

or he lavishes gifts, he doubles them with generosity.
