    When their south wind stirs the bān trees of al-ʿUdhayb,

    no rain falls upon them but the tears of my eye.

    I would make peace with patience over it, if I could,

    and seek forgetfulness of it, if I could find it.

    وما شبَّ نارَ الوجدِ إلاّ هبوبها

    And I seek, as a gift, the fragrance of its breaths [opening word unclear];

    nothing kindled the fire of longing but its blowing.

    ولكنني في هصرها استنيبها

    It did not clasp those branches treacherously;

    rather, I appoint it my deputy in bending them.

    وتدعو على شحط النوى فيجيبها

    Passion rules my heart, and my heart obeys it;

    it calls despite far separation, and my heart answers it.

    It has lately been with the beloved; and only

    where its beloved dwells does each soul's desire lie.

    ولكنها كالشمس قلَّ ضريبها

    I am mad with love for Laylā, though beauties are many;

    but she is like the sun: rare is her equal.

    I conceal my passion for fear of foes, yet I am betrayed by

    my pallor—the telltale sign of bodies is their pallor.

    ونيّةُ قلبي قدها لا قضيبها

    By her sand dune, my insistent meaning is her rounded rump;

    and my heart intends her stature, not her bough.

    يخيبكَ بعلمٍ أضلعي ولهيبها

    So, if you do not know love, ask about my love-madness for her;

    my ribs and their blaze disappoint you with knowledge [as written].

    I marvel at my eye, delighted by its sleeplessness,

    and at my liver, yearning for the one who melts it.

    And how lovely the day of farewell, and my standing

    at Kāẓima—if only a heart other than mine had been her captive.

    فما ابتسمتْ حتى بكاني رقيبها

    I stood pouring out my longing, unable to conceal it;

    she did not smile until her watcher wept for me.

    وليلة وصلٍ شفَّ قلبي مشيبها

    And many a day of parting: its youth grieved my eye;

    and a night of union: its gray hair wore my heart away.

    فنمت ثناياها علينا وطيبها

    When night concealed our whispered conversation, she smiled;

    then her front teeth and her fragrance betrayed us.

    A white oryx, free of burning love and sorrow,

    she cares nothing how her sorrowing lover passed the night.

    I have ceased loving beauties: how can their deadly attacks go unpunished,

    despite their frailty, against us—and their sins be erased?

    ولكن سلاني كيف تقسو قلوبها

    So do not ask me, you two, how their bodies grew delicate;

    but ask me, you two, how their hearts grow hard.

    ويسكن إلاّ أضلعي ووجيبها

    The nights grow long, while the eyelids are short;

    all grows still except my ribs and their throbbing.

    وأحلى أحاديث الأماني كذوبها

    But for the tales of hope, sorrow would kill me;

    and the sweetest tales of wishes are their most deceitful.

    فمازال لولا خصب دمعي جدوبها

    And many a cloud has watered the environs of al-Ghaḍā;

    yet their barrenness would not have ended but for my abundant tears.

    ولكن على لمياءَ شتت جيوبها

    Those gardens did not unfurl in joy;

    rather, over Lamyāʾ they tore their collars apart.

    O you whose stature shames the Khaṭṭī spear, show compassion

    to one whose heart's scars have baffled physicians.

    يميت ويحيي عاشقيها مصيبها

    You have dealt death with my eyelids, sound yet ailing;

    their well-aimed shot kills and revives her lovers.

    ووقفة شكوى فيك دمعي خطيبها

    My sickness bears witness to my claim of passion for you;

    and at a standing appeal against you, my tears are the orator.

    إذا أجرها لم يرج فليخش حوبها

    Fear God for the lifeblood of a yearning soul;

    if its reward is not hoped for, let the sin against it be feared.

    فلا عجبٌ أن قلّ منكِ نصيبها

    Yes, you belong to this age and its people;

    so no wonder its share from you is scant.

    فلولا ابنُ أيوبٍ تجلّت خطوبها

    I loved you and the world, and you taught it aversion;

    so, but for Ibn Ayyūb, its calamities would have shown themselves.
