للهto God (an exclamation of admiration) يومٌa day فيin سيوطSuyut وليلةٌand a night
صرفُthe vicissitudes of الزمانtime بأختهاupon its sister (its like) لاnot يغلطُblunders
What a day in Suyut, and what a night—
God has a day in Siwa and a night
the turns of Time never chance upon its twin!
The passage of time with its sister does not go wrong
بتناwe spent the night وعمرُand the life of الليلthe night فيin غلوائهِits prime
ولهand it has بنورby the light of البدرthe full moon فرعٌa head of hair أشمطgray-streaked
We spent the night while night was in the prime of its life,
We spent the night while it was lost in its passions
and by the full moon's light it had gray-streaked hair.
And the light of the full moon is its outstretched branch
والطلُّand the dew فيin سلكthe thread of الغصونthe branches كلؤلوءٍlike pearls
نظمٍstrung together يصافحهُshakes hands with it النسيمthe breeze فيسقطand so it falls
And dew on the thread of branches is like pearls
Dew in the thread of branches like pearls
strung together; the breeze shakes hands with them, and they fall.
A string that the breeze greets and then it falls
والطيرand the birds تقرأread والغديرand the pool صفيحةٌa sheet; a page

And the birds read, and the pool is a page,
The birds recite and the stream is a tray
and the wind writes, and the cloud adds dots.
The wind writes and the cloud dots
