These are not slender figures, but spears;
These are not embers, but spears unsheathed,
and those are bright swords, also called eyes.
And those are eggs, though called by other names,

They pierce every heart, though still sheathed;
They pierce each heart though still in sheaths encased,
and how can a sword cut without being drawn?
How can a blade pass through if still unpierced?

The virgins thought me stubborn in their love,
yet one fault of love is listening to reproach.
A flaw of love is listening to reproach,

My heart has turned though my body comfortless,
and a ruined dwelling cannot answer a questioner.
It answers not the questioning of the lost.

My day is gloom when sunshine hides its face,
from me—the morning suns whose spheres are canopies.
Eclipsed are the dawns with their haloed horizons.

Union with full-breasted maidens is a shade that never lasts;
The loving glances of the fair are but shadows, fleeting,
and what body's shadow does not move?
What shadow remains of one who does not tarry?

I long for India though blamed by the zealous,
I would ask, 'What became of her former days?'
Had I but spoken what her early days did!

No eye save weeping and downcast.

When every gazelle's glance held no sidelong scowl,
When the gaze of each gazelle flashed with ornament
and every reproachful word between us was love-talk.
And the reproach of all reproachers was but flirtation.

Slender-waisted, she unjustly inclined toward the slanderers;
Her undulations made us converse unintentionally
a bough bends sometimes, then stands straight.

Her curves, through her transgression, tell us:
Her silence has a purpose which binds it
no sooner was the waist terse than the rump grew expansive.
While her scarf has a contradiction all consistent.

but her sash disputes it, all twisting argument.

Her stinginess generously stirs the bounty of my tears;
Tell the cheek of my beloved chiding her jestingly,
I have never heard of bounty stirred by stinginess.
I rave with a stingy one, yet he is all generosity.

So tell the surface of her two cheeks, in sophistry,
Dawn has a sign in the morn of her beauty,
that I am enamored of a beauty spot that is all preoccupation.
To whom shall I reveal it if lips and kisses conceal it?

Its night has a sign in the dawn of her cheek;
A garden of loveliness, if one could harvest it
who could secure it for me if kissing and kisses erased it?
It would bear what modesty itself has planted.

A garden of beauty—who will aid the lover enthralled by it?
I made her my heart's prisoner against her wishes,
If only he could pluck what bashfulness brings forth!
So her frowning eye there flashes angrily,

I think it was jealousy over the heart's dark kernel,
I bowed to passion in her as she bowed,
when it imagined that kernel to be kohl.
And yielded to the perfect Sovereign.

Thus her past youth returned not,
a resolve that deceit and stratagems cannot match.
Like the crescent moon without fullness or transition.

I would say there is no refuge with them from fate.

Lord of swords that, were they not devout,
Destinies, how many a heart have pictured them,
I would say even death is no fortress against them.
And by the planets, destinies are surely watered.

Zealous—how many hearts his blades have slaked!
By it we attained the hopes that were distant,
And channels, indeed, quench burning thirst.
Forgiveness, and the hitting of the mark of fancy and hope.

And he who battles with God's sword in his hand
effortlessly; surmise and hope proved true.

That rises and sets, its zeniths unknown to Saturn.

His ranks stand aloof from the morning sun;
The brothers of kings when they are munificent,
Saturn stumbles and retreats before his utmost heights.

Brother of kings: when they give during famine,
Ask of their actions on the day they ransomed and raged,
do not call the morning rainclouds a downpour.
That the place and the parchment may inform the withered.

The beneficent show neither stinginess nor miserliness,
let drought and the pliant Khatti spears tell you.
The detractors neither cowardice nor holding back.

Givers, with neither avarice nor stinginess;
They attained the heights with the red summits humbly bowed,
spear-thrusters, with neither cowardice nor weakness.
So let no people claim that they are bees.

They won eminence with tall brown, slender spears;
Whether they fought and plundered or made peace and granted,
so no mortal can claim it was a gift.

If they wage war, they despoil; if they make peace, they give;
They forgave when wrathful and were just when judging,
or if they debate, they decide; if they boast, they surpass.
Clement when determining and generous when asked.

Meteors—ask the sky about them wherever they ride;
Truly you brought the East's kings low and abject,
rainclouds—ask the earth about them wherever they alight.
Their eyes dazzled by your kingship's declining suns.

For love of glory, they hate what they own,
When their kingdom's days grew old, they sought

Their swords learned beneficence from them;
You cast them from stern resolve, embodied,
so they lavish enemies upon death in heaps.
And your arrows never miss their mark.

they heal and wear down: they are bitter sap and honey.
The catapults upon them sightless.

Pardon when angry, justice when they judge,

forbearance when powerful, generosity when asked.

You did not end the fray without its garb being blackened,
eyes, before suns whose setting lies in clefts.
Save that it bent over, clothed with blood.

a king with whom the youth of kingship is just beginning.
Save that its lid flowed with antimony lining.

and hit with both its arrows—may no palsy strike!
The towering cities and hills hailed you,

A conquest—the ramparts' faces are not frowning,
You settled it when you secured the lands through it,
and the catapults have wide eyes upon them.
Conclusively, and the discord and babble were silenced.

The coats of mail are pools of water in their depths,
Thus to the hearts that long were settled through it
and your army's bright swords are flames within their sheaths.
Is repose, while for it in the world is glory.

Its day through you is consecrated night,
without its turning back clothed in robes of blood.
Each of them, and all the nights origin.

You stripped it of harm and clothed the age with it,
without its eyelid being kohled with dust.
So today no fear or cessation is known.

You visited Egypt with a forest of spears and sword-edges;
Where clouds are lightning and the firm of purpose rain,
the towering cities and summits were small beside it.
And for arrows in it a pouring trainer.

all together, and that crookedness and folly were set straight.
And said what pleased so that it is proverbial.

The sea does not judge what its rider supposes,
have repose there, and their cries ring through the world.
Rather it is the small craft that rocks the frail.

It rests toward its brother when neighboring,
all of it, and its nights are all hours of evening.
So the whole is united and the rope connected.

How can enemies endure one of wrathful deeds
today no ruin is feared, nor any lack of adornment.
Through their actions, while the noble by nature endure?

You came to rule the land and the excuses clear
a promise, while arrows form a pouring raincloud within them.
To you, while nature is not a thing transitional.

The hills and mountains would walk toward you.

The sea was not troubled as its rider supposes;
For it is a house you own,
rather, joy shook its flanks.
And your prey in it, its prey freely.

It thrills toward its brother when he draws alongside it;
None shall address its dweller save the Indian,
so the company is reunited and the bond is joined.
For the command of India's swords is fulfilled.

You have not determined a matter you undertake
by their deeds, though he is noble-natured and forbearing?
Save victory therein being on the move.

March, and possess the earth; the justifications are plain
So resolve the problem of the traitors' perfidy,
to you, and nature is a thing that does not change.
A sword's virtue being the curing of diseases.

If any lifeless form could move from joy,
Announce, for when you act people have no trench,
its plains and mountains would journey toward you.
No she-camel there, neither camel nor foal.

It is only a dwelling, and you are its owner;
As long as you remain, my state because of you
at your threshold, its proud lords are servants.
Is exalted, the raiment of favor flawless.

Let only the Indian blade address its inhabitants;
Let no youth despair though grand hopes fail,
for the command of India's swords is obeyed.
For after God, your hands are clasped.

victory comes there while still on the march.

So excise the oath-breakers' sickness by spilling blood, for
among a sword's virtues is that ailments are cured by it.
