The moon of loftiness has fallen, O traveler through night's darkness.
The moon of the highest realm set, O carrier of wings,
How impossible that dawn's sign should erase the darkness!
So dreams of dawn dispelling gloom are futile.

وقد عكفت حزناً من الليل في مسح
As though the horizon's stars were bewildered [final word unclear],
The stars of the horizon seem perplexed,
And kept vigil in grief, clothed in the night's sackcloth.
Grieving through the night with no pause.

The pleasure groves and dew are diminished,
And their teats yield no milk when stroked.
Never again to drip on the meadow.

The noble al-Kindi has gone his way,
Gone is fortune, following its path.
So none remains to be hoped in for protection or largesse.
None can prevent it or grant it.

Time's youth has passed, and now it is bent,
The spring of life has passed, now bent,
Though once it was supple as the upper shaft of a spear.
Though once tall as a lofty spear.

At last the gatherer of al-Khalil's learning lies buried,
The sanctuary of knowledge al-Khalili is deserted,
And its dispenser, without grudging or stinginess.
Its coffers empty, with no stinginess or dearth.

And the assayer of speech's pure gold and its flaws,
The critic of eloquence and its deviation,
So none now distinguishes beauty from ugliness.
No difference between valor and disgrace.

The sword unsheathed only briefly,
Its edge feared, its broad face admired.
Dreadful yet forgiving in battle.

Flaws in people appeared at the peak of perfection,
And sweet, fresh water is not like stagnant brine.
Sweet Euphrates unlike the salt stream.

Scholar dispelling gloom through eloquence,
The faces of meanings, neither frowning nor grim.
Meanings unveiled, not sullen or harsh.

He is the bountiful downpour; the sea within his breast
That downpour of generosity overflowing from his breast,
Surges in a flood, not a meager flow or seepage.
Pouring knowledge freely, no grudging or rationing.

The Damascus sky lightened of his departing steps,
So it complained of no burden from its rain-heavy clouds.
No longer burdened by its heavy clouds.

Overflowing like rainclouds with wisdom.

Others as dawn illuminating daybreak.

I forbade poetry's love-prelude after his death [reading uncertain],
I pondered writing verse for him after death,
And did not weep for the sands' gazelle-fawn or the slope's bān-tree.
But could not mourn shifting sands or slopes.

Wit and jest that adorned him.

Detailing it exhausts description.

The generous sky darkened, no longer bright.

I bind my heart with my fingers as one binds a broken limb,
I clutch the ruins in anguish,
But sorrow's throbs and agonizing, burning pain resist.
Sorrow rejects solace or respite.

I beg the rain-stars for rain, though they are miserly,
I summoned the clouds to weep,
So I turn insistently to my freely flowing tears.
But they receded, denying my plea.

Of merit, without commending the profit of the bargain.

With praise, like fragrant breaths wafting from a perfume-casket.
Like sparks stinging the spiteful.

The abuse of an envier, scorching like fire.

Dear to Qais and Awf tribes,
So, still a young horse, I passed the goal of full-grown racers.
Elegies for him remain beyond praise.

I counseled the nights, had they but listened to counsel.

He wore no pomp of ostentation,
And swiftly departed with the kernel and the yolk.
No garb of narcissus or basil.

Dawn's rays leading horses to meadows.

It would fly like rays pieced together.

His soul saw itself a stranger among people,
By morning's ray to riders toward a broad, clear road.
Bearing sorrow, shunning solace.

So pity one fated to remain as she wakes.

Bearing much sorrow, far from casting it off [reading uncertain].

It remained alone, morning and day, without a companion,
No good in people with faces like water,
So they feared it would linger, evening as lonely as morning.
Turbid in the basin, muddied when fetched.

We thus count this calamity a loss and a punishment,
They defend when defended by pure hands,
And one who knows them: that it remain, evening as morning [text unclear].
With no valor, like idols or rubble.

Swords upon their honor, never stirred.

To the stronghold of ancestral honor.

And came to an edifice of deep-rooted glory.
Glory and success erased together.

My dawn died with you, no more wings.

Dawn is despised, no cup revealed.
