The hand of the East unsheathed the swords of dawn.

So no blame rests on the retreating darkness.

And the fringes of its banners unfurled,

Dyed with the blood of wounds.

As though the horizon, its blossoms afloat,

Were a pool of water smiling to reveal daisies.

So cast off your two bridle-straps, for already rubbed

Are the water's gauzy robes by the palms of the winds.

And among the full moons of darkness have coursed

Stars of wine above the orbits of palms.

And the blossoms clapped, while the bān-tree's bough shook

In sorrowful longing at the winged one's song.

And a gathering whose night favored us:

Then the star of good fortune shone in its assembly.

It bestowed a fair-skinned beauty, five handspans tall; mocking

The loftiness of spears are her two flanks.

A swordswoman with her glance, an archer

With her lashes, she meets us with every weapon.

What delights me in the healing art of her eyelids

Is the cure of the sick and the sickness of the healthy.

So passion's ember comes from the coolness of dusky lips,

And longing's strength from the frailty of her sash.

What passion a glance has drawn forth!

And what earnestness jesting has harvested!

May night's curtain-keeper never strive in vain

For shielding us from the armies of dawn.

Nor, while the soil is parched, may there pass him by

The rain-cloud whose bounty is sought from al-Aziz.
