تعجّبتshe marveled منat نحوليmy wasting away وهيwhile she واصلةٌgranting union
تعجّبت من نحولي وهي واصلةٌ
توّهماًmistakenly imagining أننيthat I بالوصلthrough union انتفعُI benefit
توّهماً أنني بالوصل انتفعُ
She marveled at my wasting away, though she was granting me union,
I wondered at her slenderness while parted,
imagining that I benefited from union.
Imagining that separation does me good,
وماand not درتْshe knew أنthat خدّيهاher two cheeks ومصطبريand my endurance
وما درتْ أن خدّيها ومصطبري
كجذوةlike a glowing ember النارthe fire منهاto it قرّبwas brought near الشمعthe wax
كجذوة النار منها قرّب الشمع
And she did not know that her cheeks and my endurance
Yet she knows not that her cheek and her patience
were like an ember of fire with wax brought close to it.
Are like a glowing coal that sets flame to the candle.
والبدرُand the full moon يكملُreaches fullness حيثwhen الشمسthe sun نائيةfar away
والبدرُ يكملُ حيث الشمس نائية
عنهُfrom it ويمحقand is blotted out إذwhen بالشمسِwith the sun يجتمعit comes together
عنهُ ويمحق إذ بالشمسِ يجتمع
And the full moon reaches its fullness when the sun is far
The moon attains fullness when the sun is distant,
from it, and is blotted out when it meets the sun.
Vanquished if he meets with the sun.
