O you whose figure puts a branch of the āsin tree to shame!

There is no healer for the glances of your eye.

I weep while your mouth smiles, and I go on, out of

overwhelming grief, lamenting, while your gaze is cruel.

And you sway in exuberant youth, coquettishly.

Woe to me from that coy, swaying one!

You held me accountable on the slanderers’ word, though it is no part of

love’s justice to judge me by what people say.

And I show them that I have forgotten you, deceiving them,

yet my undoing lies in tears and sighs.

May rain bless the days of al-Nayrabayn and the pasture of the

    gazelles, from Barada to Banas.

And night wore a loose-flowing shirt, while you, O

sun of midmorning, went about bearing the winecup’s star.

when eyes held sway over hearts,

so a gazelle of the thicket ruled over the lion.

And indeed, by my love for you, if only we could gain solace,

though my hand has already clung to despair’s hem.

I have spurned longing for a time gone by,

and refused to remember the fickle, forgetful one.
