أنجلّO son عليٍّof Ali ماnever برحتyou ceased to be محمَّداًMuhammad (much-praised)
فحسَّانfor Hassan فكريof my thought فيكconcerning you إحسانهُhis excellence جمُّabundant
O son of Ali, you have never ceased to be Muhammad;
Angel of Ali, I have not ceased to praise Muhammad,
For the Hassan of my thought offers you abundant praise.
So my thoughts of you are full of kindness.
بكthrough you الدهرtime نوءٌa rainstorm كلُّهُall of it ليسthere is not ليfor me بهِin it
وقدthough it has طّبقcovered الآفاقthe horizons شربٌa draught ولاnor قسمa share
Through you, all time is a rainstorm; yet I have in it—
With you, all of time is radiance that I own nothing of,
Though it has covered the horizons—neither drink nor share.
As the horizons have been folded up, neither drink nor apportionment.
وماand not هذهthese الأيامdays إلاَّexcept صحائفٌpages
مطهَّرةٌpurified تطوىare folded away وأنتand you لهاfor them ختمa seal
And these days are nothing but pages,
These days are nothing but
Purified and folded away, with you as their seal.
Purified pages folded up, and you are their seal.
فلمso never يفترقparted إلفانِtwo companions كفَّكyour palm والنَّدىand generosity
ولمand never يصطحبkept company ضدَّانِtwo opposites عرضكyour honor والذمُّand blame
So two companions have never parted: your palm and generosity;
So your palms' friendship and the dew have not parted,
Nor have two opposites kept company: your honor and blame.
Nor have the opposites of your honor and blame accompanied each other.
وكمand how many بارقٍa lightning-flasher حاشاكfar be it from you شمتُI watched for rain سحابهُhis cloud
فشمتُthen I watched سحاباًa cloud وجهُthe face بارقهُof its lightning جهمscowling
And many a lightning-flasher's cloud I watched—never yours—
And how much lightning whose clouds I feared,
Only to find a cloud whose lightning wore a scowling face.
But I smelled clouds whose lightning face frowned.
لأنملهِto his fingertips ضربstriking; a metrical ending العروضprosody وقبضهاand its contraction
وللنحوand for grammar منamong أفعالهاtheir acts الضمُّu-voweling; closing والجزمُand apocopation; cutting off
His fingertips have prosody's striking and contraction;
I wished to grasp the meter’s rhythms and collection
And grammar finds in their acts its closing and cutting off.
And grammar’s acts of assimilation, insertion, and suppression.
هجرتُI abandoned القوافيrhymes مذsince خطبتُI sought عطاءهhis bounty
فهاso here أناI لاno نعمىblessing لديَّwith me ولاnor نعمyes
I abandoned rhymes when I sought his bounty,
I neglected rhymes when I sought his gifts,
And here I am, with neither a blessing nor a 'yes.'
So here I am with neither bounty nor bounty’s plenty.
يزيدhe increases خفاءًin concealment معdespite نباهةthe eminence قدرهِof his rank
وسوءاًand in wickedness كماjust as يخفىis hidden معwith العسلhoney السمُّpoison
He grows more hidden despite his eminent rank,
Increasing in concealment despite his evident merit
And more evil, as poison hides in honey.
And evil, as poison hides within honey.
وكنتُand I was كمنlike one who بالنجمby a star فيin الليلthe night يهتديis guided
فماyet not أنan emphatic particle أطلّappeared الصبحُthe dawn بلrather أفلset النجمthe star
And I was like one guided by a star at night,
I was like one guided by a star in the night,
Yet dawn did not appear; rather, the star set.
But when dawn rose, the star set.
وهاand here مصرُEgypt لاnot يقضىis fulfilled بهاin it حاجa need طالبof a seeker
بغاهاhe sought it ولاnor يمضىfulfills الذيwhat أملِhe hoped for حكمa decree
And here is Egypt, where no seeker's need is fulfilled,
Whether he desires it or waits for it to be ruled.
Though he sought it; nor does any decree fulfill his hopes.
I will sail the Nile as it surges
لأبحرindeed became a sea منهاfrom it النيلthe Nile وهوthough it is مجاجةٌspittle
منfrom البخلmiserliness لاno بلrather أظلمَgrew dark القمرthe moon التمfull
Indeed, the Nile there has swollen to a sea, though it is mere spittle
With stinginess—no, darker than the obscured moon.
From miserliness—no, rather, the full moon has darkened.
How many a goblet has missed its prize
وكمand how many خابfailed قدحٌa lottery arrow منfrom قبلbefore فوزهُits victory
واخطأand missed منfrom بعدafter الوثوقtrust بهin it سهمan arrow
And how many a lottery arrow failed before it won,
And how many an arrow, after being trusted, has missed.
And an arrow missed after trust had been placed in it.
Join my kinship’s rope to Syria and its people,
وصلand join حبلthe cord شمليof my reunion بالشآمto al-Sham وأهلهِand its people
فكمfor how many لكof yours عنديwith me منof يدٍa favor; a hand ماno بهاin it وصمblemish
And bind the cord of my reunion to al-Sham and its people,
For you have many flawless hands with me.
For many a favor of yours to me bears no blemish.
They shine and restrain each frightening palm,
أضاءتshone وكفَّتand restrained كفّthe hand كلِّof every مخوفةٍdanger
فلاso not ظلمُdarkness الدنياof the world تخافis feared ولاnor الظلمinjustice
They shone and stayed the hand of every danger,
So neither the world’s injustice nor tyranny is feared.
So neither the world's darkness nor injustice is feared.
I have been schooled only by a revered Scripture,
وماand not أدبىmy writing إلاّexcept كتابٌa book مكرَّمٌhonored
تراجعُretreats حربthe war الدهرof time وهيand it is بهthrough it سلمpeace
And my writing is nothing but an honored book;
Against the war of fate it is peace.
Time's war retreats and, through it, turns to peace.

Its verses bear the proof of Jesus, son of Mary:
By it the sick are healed or the deaf hear.
Through them ailments are healed, or the deaf hear.

When they are sent down onto parchment, guidance shines clear,
And if read in an assembly, reason bows down.
And if recited in an assembly, understanding prostrates itself.
Embroidered like a meadow in every rise and fall

Variegated like a garden, on every rise
And adorned in every depression and height with beauty.
And in every hollow is a mark of their beauties.
If you do not find me a eloquent praiser,

And if in my praise you do not find me a freeborn woman's son,
Then prose and verse have betrayed me.
Faithful—then prose and verse have betrayed me.
