ياO سائراًdeparting one ماnot الصبرُpatience إلاَّexcept
يا سائراً ما الصبرُ إلاَّ
عنin separation from سواهُother than him بمستطاعpossible
عن سواهُ بمستطاع
O departing one, patience is only
O traveler, what is patience but
possible in separation from anyone but you.
To abandon all except Him
هلاَّwhy did you not وقفتَyou stopped ولوeven if only وقوفَa halt السـthe torrent (first part)
هلاَّ وقفتَ ولو وقوفَ السـ
ـيلِtorrent (continuation) فيon شرفٍa height يفاعlofty
ـيلِ في شرفٍ يفاع
Why did you not stop, if only as the
If only you would pause, even if just a momentary stop
torrent stops upon a lofty height?
On a glorious, exalted hilltop
بلّغتَyou enabled to attain يومَthe day of البينparting منـwish (first part)
بلّغتَ يومَ البين منـ
ـيتهُits wish (continuation) منfrom العهدthe pledge المضاعsquandered
ـيتهُ من العهد المضاع
You granted the day of parting
You would convey on the day we parted
its wish through the squandered pledge.
My greetings from a broken covenant
وحكمتَand you judged فيover القلبthe heart الجبانcowardly
وحكمتَ في القلب الجبان
بسنَّةby the law of الشوقlonging الشجاعcourageous
بسنَّة الشوق الشجاع
And you judged the cowardly heart
And chastise the cowardly heart
by the law of courageous longing.
With the law of brave longing
هيهاتfar from possible! تسمحًyou are generous باللقاءwith a meeting
هيهات تسمحً باللقاء
وأنتَwhile you تبخلyou are miserly بالوداعwith a farewell
وأنتَ تبخل بالوداع
You are far from granting a meeting,
Alas! You would not permit a meeting
when you begrudge a farewell.
While you are stingy with farewell
