My sleeplessness and my night for you have no end.

And sweet sleep, like dawn, is unknown to me.

If love of you is deadly to lovers,

what, then, do estrangement and rejection seek?

Against whom are the Indian sword, arrows, and spears sharpened?

Glances, lashes, and stature suffice your people.

when has honey ever slaked a lovesick wanderer's burning thirst?

And many a woman with murderous glances is secure at heart,

and in love, deliberate killing calls for no retaliation.

    Her figure is straightened by thrusts, not to correct a bend;

and the rose is watered with blood, not altered by rain.

and when she looks, she is a sword whose sheath is my heart.

I implore her two languid eyelids to spare my blood,

yet her fingertips and cheek insist on its spilling.

My heart allows me Hind's figure and her breast,

but Nahd and what India forges forbid it.

She is the sun: the shade grows ample when she is near,

yet she becomes noonday heat when distance veils her.

    وتنأى وتدنو فالضلالة والرشد

    She withholds and gives freely—death and hopes fulfilled;

and draws away and draws near—straying and guidance.

She came, and everything met its likeness,

while night's tress hung black from the horizon's crown:

my eyelid and her two eyelids, my yearning and her hips,

and my heart and her two earrings, my tears and the necklace.

The anklet, bracelet, and darkness had indeed kept her secret,

but her mouth, jewels, and perfume betrayed her.

Peace upon Najd and the one who dwells in its shade,

though Najd grants only love's lingering trace.

When sorrow's fire is quenched after a brief sleep,

then with the east wind it blazes again after dying down.

If hopes promise my soul a meeting with her,

despair of her will not let their promise come true.

And, by my father, I seek healing in the sickness of her breeze,

yet it brings nothing but ardent longing and passion.

It recounts tales of the dune and its bān trees,

yet between me and the dune lie deserts, pale camels, and a swift trot.

Patience, like sleep, has perished because of its gazelles,

and longing, like sickness, lives forever in my heart.
