May God water a cool [life] at al-Maḥalla,

Tender in union's fringes, with company gathered together.

There we wed the wine, for how often

We led a necklace-adorned bride to a husband.

That evening, how many faces the garden had there,

Beautiful—and how many wide eyes the water had!

And how many arrows the cloud's bow sent forth,

And bared many a blade in the streams' sheath!

Hence the chrysanthemums' smile, while there rose

A shy blush on the roses' cheeks amid tears of dew.

And were it not for narrators—rather, slanderers—who fabricated

    Tales neither heard nor transmitted,

We would have kissed the blossoms' mouths in dew's cool freshness,

Along the river's brow, amid the shade's forelocks.
