والشّمسُand the sun ترقمُembroiders والسحائبُand the clouds تحبكُweave
Look at spring's fabric and its weaving;
Behold the weaving of spring and its threads,
And the sun embroiders, while the clouds weave.
As the sun embellishes and the clouds embroider.
والأرضُand the earth تجلىis unveiled فيin معارضrobes سندسٍof fine silk
والنهرُand the river ردنٌa sleeve بالنسيمby the breeze يفرّكis rumpled
And the earth is unveiled in robes of fine silk,
And the earth reveals itself in silk brocade,
And the river is a sleeve, rumpled by the breeze.
While the river murmurs, stirred by the breeze.
حيثُwhere الوجوهُthe faces منof البقاعthe tracts of land سوافرٌunveiled
والأقحوانُand the daisies بهاupon them ثغورٌmouths تضحكlaugh
Where the faces of the land are unveiled,
Faces gleam from all regions,
And the daisies there are laughing mouths.
Their lips smiling with laughter.
فعقولناso our minds وهيwhile they are المراتعthe pastures تجتلىare unveiled
وقلوبناand our hearts وهيwhile they are العرائسthe brides تملكُare possessed
So our minds, the pastures, are unveiled,
Our minds manifest as pastures,
And our hearts, the brides, are possessed.
And our hearts reign as brides.
وفضاءُand the expanse هاتيكthat السماءِsky معنبرٌambergris-scented
ونسيمُand the breeze ذاكthat الجوِّair منهُfrom it ممسّكmusk-scented
And the expanse of that sky is scented with ambergris,
The expanse of this sky is carpeted,
And the breeze of that air is perfumed with musk from it.
And the air of this atmosphere is perfumed.
والطلُّand the dew فيon جيدthe neck الغصونof the boughs منظّمٌstrung
وعلىand upon السّهولthe plains مبدّدٌscattered لاnot يسلكstrung
And the dew is strung on the necks of the boughs,
Dew on the cheeks of branches arranged,
And scattered over the plains, unstrung.
And on plains scattered, unconfined.
فكأنماso, as though الكافورcamphor فتَّwas crumbled بدوحهاamong its spreading trees
أوor ذرَّwas sprinkled منfrom فوقabove النّباتthe plants الدّرمكfine white flour
As though camphor had been crumbled among its spreading trees,
As if camphor was shredded in its valley,
Or fine white flour sprinkled over the plants.
Or pearls were strewn atop the vegetation.
كمhow much فضَّwas scattered فيin بطحائهاits gravelly plains منof فضّةٍsilver
بددٍscattered fragments وتبرٍand gold dust لوif only يصاغit were fashioned ويسبكand cast
How much silver is scattered across its gravelly plains,
How much silver was poured on its plains -
In fragments, and gold dust—if only it could be fashioned and cast!
Scattered, pure - were it molded it would shine.
عجباًhow strange! تخافُyou fear الفقرَpoverty أوor ترجوyou hope for الغنىwealth
ويداكand your two hands تأخذtake ماwhat تشاءُyou wish وتتركand leave
How strange: you fear poverty or hope for wealth,
Strange you fear poverty or long for wealth,
While your hands take and leave whatever you wish.
When your hands can take what they wish or leave.
فاهجرْso abandon معاتبةَreproaching اللياليthe nights وأصلاًand originally (unclear here)
دمَthe blood كرمةٍof a vine فيat عرسِa wedding لهوٍof revelry يسفكis spilled
So abandon reproaching the nights, and [unclear as written],
So cease reproaching the nights, and never
The blood of a vine, spilled at a wedding of revelry.
Spill the wine of generosity at a feast of frivolity.
سخطَresented الأنامhumankind علىagainst الزمانtime وصرفهِand its vicissitudes
ورضىand the approval الخلائقِof people غايةٌa goal لاnot تدركattained
Humankind has resented time and its vicissitudes,
Resent not the disfavor of people or fate,
And people's approval is a goal that cannot be attained.
For the contentment of creation is an unreached goal.
ونهايةُand the end الدنياof the world وغايةand the final lot أهلهاof its people
ملكٌdominion يزولvanishes وسترُand the veil قومٍof a people يهتكis torn away
And the world's end, and the final lot of its people,
The end of this world and its people’s quest
Are dominion that vanishes, and a people's veil torn away.
Is a kingdom that fades and a veil that rends.
كمhow many a لذّةٍpleasure فيهاin it تشابُis mingled بذلّةٍwith humiliation
أمنيةٌa wish هيit بالمنيّةِby death تنهكis worn down
How many a pleasure in it is mingled with humiliation,
What pleasure in it resembles misery?
A wish is worn down by death.
A wish that with death shreds the seeker.
تحلوit tastes sweet فتعتبthen brings displeasure غصّةًa choking pang ومرارةًand bitterness
وتحبُّand is loved وهيthough it بناagainst us تصولassails وتفتكand slays
It tastes sweet, then brings displeasure—a choking pang and bitterness,
It tastes sweet then embitters like bile,
And it is loved, though it assails and slays us.
Loves, yet rages and rends us apart.
فاعجبْso marvel لهذاat this الكونworld منof متحركٍa moving thing
يلقىis encountered وحيٍّand a living being بينamid ذلكthat يهلكperishes
So marvel at this world: a moving thing
Marvel at this universe of motion,
Is encountered, while a living being perishes amid it all.
Receiving revelation amidst its decay.
