Lightning spoke of Saʿdā and did not lie.
The lightning spoke truly of Saadi, not lying,
And tears explain what it dictated through what they wrote.
And the tears explain what he dictated in his writings.

لوif only كانit were يملكto possess ذاكthat الظَّلمtooth-luster والشَّنباand cool sweetness of teeth
It parts, flashing crosswise, to reveal the likeness of her smiling mouth—
One who objects presumptuously about the likes of his smile,
if only it possessed that tooth-luster and cool sweetness.
Would act oppressively out of envy and spite.

علىagainst مقاتلthe vitals of صبرٍpatience عنهمُin their absence فنباand glanced aside
A sword of yearning: never were its edges drawn
A sword of love whose thrusts cannot be faulted,
against the vitals of patience in their absence only to glance aside.
Against a patient fighter they retreated and fled.

And if its flash travels through a watch of night,
If its gleam stole through the darkness of night,
it whitens whatever was dyed of the horizons’ locks.
It would turn the horizons' darkness to vivid red.

And a wakeful one—the eye gave it its slumber,
An insomniac whom sleep has abandoned,
and no generous soul permits refusal of what it asks—
And a generous man does not reject a request.

keeps my eyelid awake, deceives me, then flares with light,
My eyes deceive me, then rapidly yearn,
until hidden yearning stirs; then the light fades.
Until the hidden longing of love stirs and wakes.

A fire: when an east breeze stirs it by night,
A fire, when the morning breeze stokes it at night,
its flash turns the charcoal of dark nights into gold.
Turns the embers to pure gold and makes its flames shine bright.

O absent ones! No, by glory, never has
Oh absent ones, though glory is lost without you,
my eye—much less my heart—lost absent ones like them.
Never would my eyes or heart replace you.

If I possessed what you have become more entitled to
If I owned what I most deserve to possess,
than I, I would soothe a heart that has so often trembled.
I would comfort a heart that has long been in distress.

I weep for the slender figures and what their waistcloths enfold,
I weep for the past, and what its ruins contain,
while my reprover takes them for branches and dunes.
With branches and thickets reproaching me again.

A dwelling: if I could, in my yearning, while it lies barren,
A house - if I poured out love and it still felt desolation,
I would slaughter tears and clouds in its two courtyards.
I would shed tears of blood in its courtyard pavilion.

أنfor يدركَto attain المتمنّيthe wisher كلَّall ماthat طلباhe sought
The wish for it is sweet within my heart, yet it is impossible
To long for it is sweet, though impossible to attain,
for the wisher to attain everything he seeks.
That one who longs should achieve all that they hoped to gain.

And a night when the full moon was our cupbearer,
One night the full moon, our cupbearer, gave us wine,
passing meteors around an orbit of her drinkers.
Circling in a sky filled with stars that brightly shine.

A virgin wine: when deflowered with water, she treats us
At dawn, it dispensed drinks that vigorous and bright,
in earnest, though she plays within her cups.
Although in the cups there was just reflected light.

Red with bashfulness—yet when she is mixed,
Red from shyness, until when blended,
we cannot tell whether she reddens from bashfulness or anger.
We couldn't tell if from modesty or anger it was tinted.

With cool, sweet water her ember grows,
With cold water it increases its smoldering fervor,
and I have never heard of water kindling flame.
Never have I heard tell of speaking water set aflame.

How noble this daughter of the vine, whom bareness adorns!
With it, the daughter of generosity was honored,
And what a beloved she is, necklaced with bubbles!
What a love it is, surrounding all with its flair!

She clothes the drinking companion in delight when he tastes her,
It adorns the companions when they taste it,
as though what he drank were the sun’s radiance.
As if sunlight itself were mixed in their share.

O wakeful watcher of the night when its scorpions slept,
Oh you who stay awake when the night's hours fade,
and you who brave calamity where sweet water has turned to torment,
And come to sweet waters where purity's displayed.

with the pale camels you attained the hope I cherish,
You attained by nightfall what I hope for tomorrow,
far away—we are among mounts that brought us to Aleppo.
On ships that reached Aleppo from stretch of desert sorrow.

بوارقاًlightning flashes لاnot تشكَّىcomplain of الأينweariness والوصباand pain
Darting from the skin of night, you would think them
Vessels we thought from the dark night's confusion,
lightning flashes that complain of neither weariness nor pain.
Were clouds, with no clear shape or scale to measure.

I kept ascending toward her in resolve and night travel—
I continued aspiring toward it, decided and bold,
may it not fail—until I reached the full moon and the clouds.
Until I reached the full moon and clouds as I was told.

I remember her figure, gray-haired with age,
I promised its figure, slender from aging,
and today she struts in the two robes of love and youth.
Yet today it struts in my love with youthful engaging.

أوor يعملdirected النجمthe star طرفاًa glance نحوهاtoward her لكباit would stumble
If lightning shifted its glance below her, it would fall,
If only lightning would glance her way and desire,
or if a star directed its gaze toward her, it would stumble.
Or the stars gaze toward her, they'd erupt into fire.

I fear and hope in her whose deeds were cruel
I fear yet hope she'll act kindly despite past disdain,
through rejection, though her dream-phantom made reunion beautiful.
Her image promises better though she caused me pain.

فقلthen say فيof جباتa coward (uncertain reading) عاينfaced القوسthe bow والنَّبلاand the arrows
She drew her brows together; then her glances charged.
She frowned her eyebrows then blinked her eyelashes,
Think, then, of a coward facing the bow and arrows.
So describe in verse the bow and arrow that flashes.

أخوa man of وجلٍfear اوunless سلَّwas drawn منfrom طرفهاher glance نصلاa blade
Nor would he show meek submission before calamity—
It wasn't right for a suitor to request her hand,
that fearful man—unless a blade were drawn from her glance.
Whether a brave hero or envoy made to stand.

إذاwhen لاعبتْthey played with أحيانَat times when ترسلهاshe lets them loose الحجلاthe anklets
I melt in jealousy over those tresses,
I melt with jealousy when her tresses blow freely,
when they play with the anklets at times when she lets them loose.
Playing sometimes, unleashed by her untamed beauty.
وماand never قلتI said يوماًone day للغرامto passion وعسفهِand its tyranny
رويداًgently ولاnor برحِthe torment of السقامsickness لهاfor her مهلاslowly
I have never told passion and its tyranny,
Never have I said to love and its excess:
“Gently!” nor the torment of sickness for her, “Ease up!”
Gently, give me relief, grant my distress recess.

أضيقI am constrained بهby him سمعاًin hearing ويوسعنيand he lavishes on me عذلاreproach
And my greatest concern is an envier who seems an adviser:
My greatest worry is one who pretends to advise,
I can scarcely bear to hear him, while he lavishes reproach on me.
But hears me narrowly and amplifies vice.

وقدand indeed جعلوهاthey made them بالهوىin love شاهداًa witness عدلاupright
And a woman judge who pronounces my tears foolish,
A judge rules to ridicule my falling tears,
though they have made them an upright witness to love.
Though they made her witness, claiming impartial ears.
وثقتI trusted بعينيهاin her two eyes فخاناand both betrayed تجلُّديmy fortitude
فلاso do not تأمنواtrust منfrom بعدهاafter her الأعينthe eyes النجلاwide
I trusted her two eyes, and both betrayed my fortitude;
I trusted her eyes, though they betrayed my reserve,
so after her, put no trust in wide eyes.
So trust no more in gazes however they swerve.

وماyet not ظفرتgained كفُّthe hand of أمرءٍa man عشقَwho loved البخلاstinginess
And I adore her stinginess as protection for her beauty,
I love her frugality, to keep her beauty intact,
yet no man’s hand ever gained by loving stinginess.
No other's hand has gained when avarice holds them back.

May God water the ruins of the sanctuary with every downpour
May Allah water the meadows of every ruined abode,
pouring from rain clouds—not a sprinkling or dew.
With heavy cloudbursts, not mere showers that glowed.

And if no cloud rains generously on Saʿdā, O Saʿd,
If you do not find, oh Saadi, good fortune or luck,
then may no land receive rain or grow herbage.
Still no land rains, or sprouts greenery unstuck.
