إن كان ما زعم الواشون فهتُ بهِ

إن كان ما زعم الواشون فهتُ بهِ

أو كان ذلك في جدّي وفي مزحي

أو كان ذلك في جدّي وفي مزحي

If I uttered what the slanderers claimed,

If what the slanderers claim were true,

or if that was so in my earnestness and in my jesting,

Or if that was in my earnest or my jest,

أو كنت خنتكَ في قربٍ وفي بعدٍ

أو كنت خنتكَ في قربٍ وفي بعدٍ

في الهجر والمنع أو في الوصل والمنحِ

في الهجر والمنع أو في الوصل والمنحِ

or if I had betrayed you in closeness and in distance,

Or if I had betrayed you, in nearness or distance,

in estrangement and withholding, or in union and giving,

In estrangement or refusal, or in union and gift,

فلا أنجلى ليل أحزاني ولا طلعتْ

فلا أنجلى ليل أحزاني ولا طلعتْ

شمس السُّلافة في ليل من القدح

شمس السُّلافة في ليل من القدح

then may the night of my sorrows never lift, nor may there rise

Then my night of sorrows would not brighten

the sun of choice wine in the goblet’s night.

Nor would the sun of concord rise in any night.
