I reproached Death on your account, O House of Munqidh—

if only Death would heed a word.

And I told her: 'Your right hand would be kissed, if it could compensate

for every right and left hand it has impoverished.'

For eminence has no adornment without generosity,

nor the world any splendor without perfection.

    فأنتم على الأرزاء أي جبال

    And from you I learned patience, while patience was far away;

for what mountains you are in the face of calamities!

Grievous to you is a death not brought about

by the points of keen swords or the heads of tall spears.

And though she has taken a shooting star from you, among you remain

thunderbolts of battle and rainclouds of bounty.
