تأملتُ تصنيف هذا السـ

ـعيد وإنّي لأمثاله ناقدُ

ـعيد وإنّي لأمثاله ناقدُ

I examined the compilation of this al-Sa—

I contemplated the classification of this happy one

—ʿīd; indeed, I am a critic of works like it.

And I am like him, a critic

فكم ضمَّ بيت نهى سائراً

فكم ضمَّ بيت نهى سائراً

وصيد به مثلٌ شارد

وصيد به مثلٌ شارد

And how many a widely circulating verse of wisdom it contains,

So he brought together in a house desires wandering

and many a stray proverb has been caught within it!

And with it an example gets distracted

وفي عجب البحر قولٌ يطول

وفي عجب البحر قولٌ يطول

وأعجبه ضفدعٌ صائد

وأعجبه ضفدعٌ صائد

And there is much to say about the sea’s wonders;

And the ocean's speech is long

and its strangest wonder is a frog that hunts.

And a frog, the hunter, amazes it
