    فعلامَ في خديه آثار الدمِ

    His two eyes struck my heart dead with arrows;

then why are there traces of blood on his cheeks?

I loved him, his sash swelling with youth,

lush, bitter in estrangement, sweet of smile.

He decrees—dissent is his doctrine—that he withhold

sweet, dusky lips, yet permits the killing of a Muslim.

he enriches the destitute with the grain of his beauty spot.

and the full moon in darkness's palm is like a dirham.

Beauty was not made known, so it strutted in

a radiant face beneath a dark night.

His face thus has a patterned brocade,

and a garment is incomplete if it is not patterned.

I spent the treasure of my tears in loving him,

even on his censurers and reproachers.

And the donning of sickness's robe, yellow and plain—

why, then, is he robed in patterned beauty?

He kept forsaking me and withholding his dream-image,

until I grew angry at sleeping eyelids.

So, if I could, I would erase the signs of darkness

with dawn, or awaken every slumberer.

And how often I rode toward him upon a pitch-black night,

and my tears were like the pitch-black darkness,

within it, and the fire's face was unveiled.

bright, drifting over a brimming vessel.

each more wakeful than the eyelids of a distraught lover,

sore-eyed, and fluttering more than a lovesick heart.

O my friend, where sitting idle means destitution,

rise, for humiliation is the ugliest brand.

    and otherwise—[wording unclear]—save in a resolute man's right hand.

What have I to do with the days, which have held back

my fortune, though they have attested to the merit of my precedence?
