He clung to sorrow and defied the reproachers' words:

a lovesick man who obeyed his passion for his first beloved.

And despair set him free, so he does not linger

at the trace of a house or a dwelling's familiar haunts.

His tears grew light, but within his breast

longing and anguish have a burdened man's gait.

Tears are divided by melancholy and love

between the traveler who has gone and the one yet to come.

And often a hopeful man's eyelids are made to weep

by joy that surprises him—if it does not kill him.

And this is fidelity; I am not to be blamed for having

become subject to shifting and change.

I would not have complained of separation's sword-drawn assault

had my tears' forbearance not turned to folly.

And longing is a state to which reason submits,

and which melts the heart of the shrewd, resourceful man.

So show fortitude, for the noblest thing a young man wears,

while time's calamity lies bare, is a robe of dignified composure.

For anyone brought low after al-Aziz, this indeed

is a day whose worth we exalt through al-Afdal.
