Gone is the lord of high station, whom the heart embraced.
The one with the generous chest has passed away,
And the spacious dwellings, bereft of him, stand deserted and desolate.
And the melodies of his poetry left the land desolate.

He departed, praised, with youth following in his wake.
He bid farewell while still young,
Can a bereaved heart endure the loss of both?
What heart bereft of him could show patience?

I blamed the nights for their betrayal—but
the first female whose traits included treachery.
Betrayal was never a trait of womankind first.

The water of tears has melted after its freezing,
The tears, frozen for so long, are flowing now;
and never before this had embers melted into water in sorrow.
Never before did molten lead flow from a stone.

On the day I lost him, I was like a suckling infant,
It's as if I'm an infant, newly orphaned,
and the cradle and milk of his tender care were beyond reach.
Deprived of the comforts of his cradle and wealth.

A springtime passed; affliction touched me after it.
A spring had passed whose sorrows ruined me—
Had it not passed, affliction would not have touched me.
Had it not ended, sorrow would not have touched me.

I am like a night traveler amid pitch-black nights,
I walk as if lost in an ignorant, aimless dark—
now that his radiant days have carried away the dawn.
Its shining days have vanished with the dawn.

Poor yet possessing boundless wealth.

The heir of glory and grace settled down,
His excellence is not hidden, nor his wealth scant.
With no lack of merit or abundance of meanness.

A noble youth, gone with all he owned—
just as poverty vanished through his fingertips.
As suddenly impoverished as he was wealthy.

Where is that fair hand? All is dark.
And where the sweet bounty and the bitter pride?
Where is that sweet union? Life is bitter.

To which the sea itself was but a drop?

Did it not shred banners high atop their spears?

The earth with the red embers of fire?

Scattering jewels about like stars plucked from their settings?

The next morning only fragments of spears and armor remained
and repeated hardship and ease found him praiseworthy.
For the delicate ladies with graceful figures.

An impenetrable fortress that no enemies could breach.

Leaving them pale without enhancement.

Vowing never to have color or warmth again.

Enduring glory or profitable compensation.

The soil was an ear attentive to my sorrow,
My soul's devotion carries it to you.
for which those moist pearls and loose gems were fashioned.

Access to your sanctuaries, no matter my lifespan.
even were the river to flow over him like the torrent of your bounty.
I send you the prime of my poetry

وكمand how many منof مريدa willing person لاnot يساعدهhelps him الدهرtime
وكم من مريد لا يساعده الدهر
My delay in visiting is no forgetting;
When the treasures overflow the jars containing them.
how many a willing man time fails to help.
If I recited them at a friendly gathering,

Many an approach has ended in separation,
The pious would ask, “Is that wine I smell?”
and a union with him began in estrangement.

My knowledge has quieted some of what I feel:
Of the miracle of Moses’ staff.
we are a people whose qualities include patience.
The sea splits open in awe of their eloquence,

It was not disloyalty that kept me from you, nor did
Hiding its head in modesty beneath the shells.
my mounts turn away from the city where you lie—Egypt.

Though separation holds my body back from you,
What excuse could justify such shortcomings?
devotion sends my heart forth to you.

Even if the Nile flooded the earth with my tears.
of verse, a virgin whose bower is too narrow to conceal her.

Whenever her verses are passed around in an assembly,
For time does not assist most admirers.
the pious man asks, 'When was it dissolved in wine?'
A short visit may end lasting companionship,

My reed pen was Moses' staff, and my envier,
And those once close become strangers.
in the matter of its verse, Pharaoh; the words were magic.

For its precious worth, the vast sea split open,
For it is human nature to be patient.
and pearls hid their heads among its shells.

From that Egypt where I would settle again.
yet falls short of the goal, has no excuse.
