    في خلوةٍ منهُ ولا حفلِ

    And a people's chief brings no joy to a brother,

    Whether alone with him or at a gathering;

    أعمى الفطانةِ أكمهُ العقل

    Weak of resolve, rash and impetuous,

    Blind in discernment, his reason blind from birth;

    Dwindling in virtue, he freezes at

    Generosity's demands and melts in frivolity.

    No creature is more foolish than you, who keep his company

    In hope, appealing on the strength of merit.

    A man who finds his companion

    Hard to bear when he shows signs of nobility.

    But if you act the fool, you are fairer in

    His eyes than the image of miserliness.

    Soft in resolve despite his harshness,

    Alive in arrogance, dead to justice.

    So neither among the war-band nor the caravan is he

    Counted, nor in binding and loosing.

    May the clouds never rain upon his dwelling, nor

    May God ever join my company with his.
