And you granted him honor without humiliation—

but for you, that honor would have been beyond reach.

The enemies mistook an ailment you suffered

for weakness that would lower your station from its heights.

Does a night's concealment blemish the sun,

or is it wrong for the full moon to veil itself?

Let whoever has ancestry like yours stand tall,

or else leave the paths of eminence and stand aside.

A grandfather whose eminence reaches the stars' bounds,

and a father who refuses reproach when it is brought to him.

In you I have a sea whose waters never pour forth

grudgingly, and a sword never said to fail.

So my allegiance is like allegiance to Muhammad's family.

It is a creed that love for you has gilded.

You made composing poetry easy for me, taming

what in it had been inaccessible and hard to master.

In each phrase's house I spent the night lodging

a meaning so eloquent it could almost deliver an oration.

    وإذا مدحت سواك كنتُ مكذَّبا

    So when I praise you, my words about you are believed;

and when I praise another, I am disbelieved.

May you live on, enjoying good fortune as your servant,

security as your home, and well-being as your mount.
