وقالواand they said هجاكhe lampooned you الصديقُthe friend الصدقُthe sincere one
وقالوا هجاك الصديقُ الصدقُ
وذلكand that عينُthe very essence of العجيبthe strange العجابthe astonishing
وذلك عينُ العجيب العجاب
And they said: Your true friend has lampooned you,
and that is the very wonder of wonders.
فقلتso I said لهمto them إنindeed هجوَthe lampooning of الحبيبthe beloved لـsurely
فقلت لهم إن هجوَ الحبيب لـ
ـكابنlike the son of الغمامthe clouds الحبابthe foam
ـكابن الغمام الحباب
So I told them: The beloved’s lampoon is surely
like the cloud’s son—the foam.
وكمand how much فيin الهوىlove منof سبابٍabuse يلذُّis delightful
وكم في الهوى من سبابٍ يلذُّ
طعماًin taste ومنand of غضبٍanger مستطابfound pleasant
طعماً ومن غضبٍ مستطاب
And how much abuse in love is delightful
to the taste, and how much anger is relished!
فقالواthen they said لقدindeed اللئامِthe base men
فقالوا لقد اللئامِ
وكنتَand you were عهدتI recall عتيدَready with الجوابthe answer
وكنتَ عهدت عتيدَ الجواب
Then they said: Indeed ... the base men ...
And you were, I recall, ready with an answer.
فقلتso I said لهــــمto them
فقلت لهــــم
منwho يجيبanswers نباحthe barking of الكلابthe dogs
من يجيب نباح الكلاب
So I said to them:
Who answers the barking of dogs?
