She knew she was the morning sun, so she shone forth;
And that my wish was union with her, so she feigned offence.

Her side refused to bend toward a lovesick man,
Yet the east wind stirred her flanks, and she swayed.

I seek love's peace at her eyelids—
If only the sword of her glance were not drawn.

Keep my gaze's arrow from my heart, for how often
I have shot, and my eye's arrow has struck my heart dead.

Had her cheek not held error and guidance,
I would not, through it, stand between my fire and my paradise.

Ask me about the longest night I spent awake,
While she slept, heedless of my need, and withdrew.

And dawn has kissed the darkness and its delusion;
My eyelids' hope is to replace a living one with a dead one.

I think the nights begrudge a return
To heal a heart they maddened and wasted away.

Indeed, Sulayma will not heed a caller,
Yet oh, how often my locks summoned her, and she came!

So too, dark nights are more secretive about night travel
Within their breasts, when bright nights betray fair women.

And but for passion, I would not be wasted by loving her who

And beneath darkness's wing, the lightning seemed
Like Imad al-Din's swords, unsheathed amid battle-dust.
