Easy now, you who claim the honor of the heights.

For you are a man counted neither among kernels nor yolks.

    You began a war, though you were not one of its men;

Then, when it struck you, you turned toward peace.

And you woo the affection of mine that you divorced,

Yet you keep folding one flank of yours upon the other.

You mingle harm with favors, and insincerity with affection,

And malice of heart with intimacy, and deceit with sincere counsel.

And you envy the one you befriended—yours is waywardness—

Even if he is poor, for his loaf of bread and salt.

And you [have not restrained] your tongue from obscenity,

Out of folly; nor have you extended your fingers, from stinginess.

You disfigure the virtue of forbearance with rashness, in jest,

And revive the spirit of earnestness in the guise of jest.

So how long must I find in your nature, in morning light,

Scorpions creeping from your deceit in the gloom of night?

    You escaped unscathed—may you not escape!—because I

Considered you, and found you fit for neither satire nor praise.

So may the All-Merciful never join your striving with guidance,

Nor your action with goodness, nor your purpose with success.

    And my soul has wearied of any place you inhabit;

For there is no death but your herd’s nearness to my pasture.

So, O two companions of my saddle, while the night scowls,

Perhaps night travel is a road to smiling dawn.

Direct the breasts of the tireless she-camels, in yearning,

Toward every generous man, like the upper shaft of a spear.

Visit the knights of the reed pen and the spear,

And alight among the sons of generosity and largesse.

For I am not the first night traveler who alone cast down

The veil of darkness from the face of victory and conquest.
