And a man of wealth has never ceased to crave depravity,

and shuns the pursuit of noble deeds and praise.

He is a man who grows only baser,

even were they to wed him to houris in the Garden of Eternity.

I marveled at his palms, with no moisture in either,

though it is said that water lies in solid rock.

And I hoped for his bounty, but when I put him to the test,

I was afflicted with one whose bounty was scant and whose water bitter:

more foolish than a desert lizard, more cowardly than a fawn,

and stingier than a dog, and uglier than a monkey.

And you call him “master” in every circumstance,

but he refuses all but the ways of a slave.
