لاdo not تعجبنَّmarvel (emphatic) لطالبِat a seeker بلغَattained المنىwishes
لا تعجبنَّ لطالبِ بلغَ المنى
كهلاًin middle age وأخفقand failed فيin الشبابyouth المقبلِbudding
كهلاً وأخفق في الشباب المقبلِ
Do not marvel at a seeker who attained his wishes
Do not be amazed at one who attained his goal
in middle age, though he failed in his budding youth.
Old, though failing in the bloom of youth -
فالخمرfor wine تحكمrules فيover العقولِminds مسنّةًwhen aged
فالخمر تحكم في العقولِ مسنّةً
وتداسand is trodden أوَّلat the beginning of عصرهاits pressing بالأرجلwith feet
وتداس أوَّل عصرها بالأرجل
For wine rules over minds when aged,
Wine masters minds when aged,
yet at its first pressing it is trodden underfoot.
And feet tread its first pressing.
