as though a hand were drawing out a ribbon of gold.

as the folds of a breast enfold a secret.

I told her, “How like strung pearls are scattered ones!”

and the Pleiades' custom is to be a mansion of the moon.

How often I plunged through fire before her face's paradise,

yearning for the glowing coals that dwelt within it.

I would have asked about the languor in her eyelids.

We passed the night: my kisses were no necklace for her neck,

in chastity, nor was my embrace a sash about her waist.

How many a day of union was pure, shining white,

yet it was a mole upon the cheek of time,

We departed with reason's sobriety in our deeds,

although our minds held the rapture of intoxication.

with youth's water freely given, and provision from life's years.

the acacias were their canopies, with tawny gazelles beneath.

was like a crescent appearing in the month's darkness.

chamomile mouths thirsting for a river.

Steps toward them, while the arrowheads seemed

lingering remnants of the embers their hospitality had left.
