يا مخجلَ القمر المنيرَ

بوجههِ في الموهنِ

O one who shames the radiant moon

with his face in the depths of night!

ويلاه من قلبٍ لهُ

ويلاه من قلبٍ لهُ

قاسٍ وعطفٍ لينَ

قاسٍ وعطفٍ لينَ

Alas for that heart of his,

so hard, and that supple flank!

فارقتني فعدمتُ طيبَ

فارقتني فعدمتُ طيبَ

العيش مذ فارقتني

العيش مذ فارقتني

You left me, and I lost the sweetness

of life, ever since you left me.

وتظنُّ ذلك هيّناً

وتظنُّ ذلك هيّناً

عندي وليس بهيّن

عندي وليس بهيّن

And you think that a light matter

to me, yet it is no light matter.

يا ما لقيت من الحصو

يا ما لقيت من الحصو

رِ ومن سقام الأعين

رِ ومن سقام الأعين

Ah, what I have suffered from the withholding

one, and from the languor of eyes!

وكذاك كلُّ بديع

وكذاك كلُّ بديع

وصفِ الحسن ليس بمحسن

وصفِ الحسن ليس بمحسن

Likewise, everyone wondrous

in beauty's qualities is unkind.

وقد كنت مستوراً وأنت

وقد كنت مستوراً وأنت

كما أردتَ فضحتني

كما أردتَ فضحتني

I had remained concealed, but you,

just as you wished, exposed me.

وتظلُّ تسال عن دمي

وتظلُّ تسال عن دمي

عمداً وأنتَ قتلتني

عمداً وأنتَ قتلتني

And you keep asking about my blood

deliberately, though you yourself killed me.

يا صاح قم متفضلاً

يا صاح قم متفضلاً

فأشرب هنيئاً واسقني

فأشرب هنيئاً واسقني

O friend, rise and be so kind:

drink with pleasure, and pour for me.

وأدر سلافةِ سلافةَ ذكرهِ

وأدر سلافةِ سلافةَ ذكرهِ

وبه فديتَ فغنّي

وبه فديتَ فغنّي

And pass round pure wine—the pure wine of remembering him;

and sing of him—may you be ransomed!
