And many a scene at al-Nayrabayn I witnessed,

When life was fresh and time a youth.

جمّد المدامُ بهنَّ فهو فواكهٌ

جمّد المدامُ بهنَّ فهو فواكهٌ

تجنى وذاب التبر فهو مدام

تجنى وذاب التبر فهو مدام

There wine congealed into fruit

To be plucked; and gold melted into wine.

مخطوبةٌ جليت فنقَّطها الحيا

بعقود درٍّ خانهنَّ نظام

A betrothed bride was unveiled; then rain bespangled her

With necklaces of pearls whose string had betrayed them.

فالدوح يرقص والبروق بجوها

مثل الصوارم في الزفاف تشام

مثل الصوارم في الزفاف تشام

So the spreading trees dance, and lightning in her sky

Is like sharp swords unsheathed at a wedding.

سفرت فنرجسها المضعف أعينٌ

سفرت فنرجسها المضعف أعينٌ

والورد خدٌّ والقضيبُ قوامُ

والورد خدٌّ والقضيبُ قوامُ

She unveiled her face: her double-flowered narcissi are eyes,

The rose her cheek, the slender branch her form.
