    كلانا معنّى بالقدود متيّمُ

    The east wind’s breeze, like me, is well and falls ill;

both of us are tormented by slender figures, enslaved by love.

I love the earth: its branches have won my heart,

and slanderers and reproachers failed to thwart my love for them.

How often conjectures were hurled about me, though they did not know

for whom I weep, or with whom I am in love.

    وحسبك من دمعٍ يبوح ويكتم

    Surely excessive weeping has distracted them from love;

and enough for you are tears that reveal and conceal.

The breeze’s tales grow delicate in meaning,

and lightning’s signals conceal, yet are understood.

Ah, that flood of water—if only it cooled my heart!

And how lovely that scattering—if only it were strung!

How long shall I hide love, while sickness reveals it,

and weep, while my gray hair laughs and smiles?

The fresh growth did not wither from old age,

but only because my resolve is a blazing ember.

I was deposed: youth had been a dominion

in which I neither complained nor sought redress.

And though fair women cast off whiteness, I

have thereby donned reason’s embroidered robe.

They harmed us, though they are our desire; and we were led astray

by love for them from guidance’s path, though they are stars.

Bodies that make hearts suffer, and faces

in which our eyes find pleasure and delight.

By the dwelling abandoned by Umm Malik—

a man of yearning feels ashamed to forsake it—

    ولكنَّها للبين تبلى وأسقم

    I have never seen two like us, relics of ardent love;

yet through parting they wear away, while I grow sick.

I remember that hillside, when it seemed,

in its greenery, a cheek finely patterned with down.

It rose beyond the mounts’ forefeet, so its dust

is kissed by us and pressed to our lips.

And if the full moon could, while the sky lay unveiled,

it would cross that horizon with its face veiled.

And a drowsy-eyed one assails us; his glances are desired,

and his eyelids oppress us and rule over us.

So do not marvel at me, struck down on meeting him:

for his eyebrow and lashes are a bow and arrows.

Never have I seen anything sweeter than the ṣād of his eye,

nor anything like the nūn of his temple, dotted with a mole.

    فيا حسنهُ يوماً يضيءُ ويظلم

    He shines with his face’s radiance and darkens in his tresses;

how lovely he is—a day that shines and darkens!

    فلي في هواهُ جنَّةٌ وجهنَّم

    He grants favor as Ridwan and tyrannizes as Malik;

so in loving him I have Paradise and Hell.

How much intoxication lingers in me from sipping dusky lips!

And saliva is nothing but wine, whose cup is the mouth.

They said, 'Will you not weep blood after their parting?'

And one who has no heart—how can he have blood?

Despair sets them far away, and eager hope draws them near,

so my eyelid acts rashly, while my ribs show forbearance.

O you who excuse me, how beautiful is passion for them!

And you who reproach me, how ugly is patience without them!

As though my riding camels had never knelt in Egypt,

nor had its Fustat and al-Muqattam stirred their longing.

    I severed the cords of union through distance and estrangement;

had she kept the bond, I would not have shunned and severed it.

So none visits but longing and remembrance of him,

and none draws near but a phantom offering greetings.

I tested this age until I knew it,

and one ignorant of a thing is not like one who knows.

I searched the entrails of time and its people:

so none is noble but the exalted king.
