And a day like a Samharī spear's shadow I shortened
with one who kept a promise—I had nearly perished while he would not fulfill it.

فواخجلةَso, oh the shame of الصهباءthe tawny wine والنرجسand the narcissus الغضِّfresh
He gave me, upon his eyelids, a drink of his sweet saliva—

And I kept spurning Babylonian wine, though its fragrance
was like freshly opened musk, hastily unsealed—

a choice wine: when he brought its cup near his mouth,
its tint was visibly cast upon his cheek.

Lightning's mouth smiled, and the rain sobbed,
and the blossoms' eyes awoke there from slumber,

May God water those clouds! They did not merely water the soil—
they have indeed cast the sky's robe upon the earth.
