لقدindeed لجَّpersisted دمعيmy tears ليلةَon the night of السّفحthe hillside بالسّفحِin pouring forth
ولاand no غروwonder أنthat تبكيshould weep البخيلةthe miserly eye بالسّمحِwith lavish tears
Indeed, that night at the hillside, my tears persisted in streaming.
My tears flooded the slopes at nightfall,
No wonder the miserly eye should weep with lavish tears.
No wonder the miserly weeps for the generous.
تطاولَgrew long ليليmy night والجفونwhile the eyelids قصيرةshort
فلاso may no زانadorn وجهَthe face of الأفقthe horizon ثغرٌa mouth منof الصبحِdawn
My night grew long, my eyelids too short to close.
My night grew long while my eyelids remained short,
So may no smile of dawn adorn the horizon's face!
So the horizon did not adorn its mouth with the dawn's smile.
ليfor me اللهGod منِagainst طرفٍan eye طويلlong سهادهits sleeplessness
علىover نازحٍa distant beloved أفنىexhausted دموعيmy tears بالنّزحthrough distance
God help me with an eye whose sleeplessness is long,
May God grant me respite
Over a distant beloved whose absence has drained my tears.
To a displaced man who has wasted his tears in displacement.
حشاfilled كلَّevery قلبheart لوعةwith anguish صمتُthe silence of قلبهِhis bracelet
وضاعفهاand doubled it نطقthe speech of النطاقينthe two girdles والوشحand the jewelled sashes
His bracelet's silence filled every heart with anguish,
The heart grieves in silent sorrow,
And the speech of the two girdles and jewelled sashes doubled it.
Its speech through my cheeks and dress multiplied it.
وياand O دارُdwelling بانَdeparted الآمراتُthe women who command علىover النهىreason
فلاso may not خفقتْflutter راياتthe banners of بأنكِyour ben trees والطّلحand the acacias
O dwelling, the women who command reason have departed;
O abode whose beauties have been forbidden,
So may the banners of your ben trees and acacias never flutter!
No banners flutter for you, neither date palms nor acacias.
ولمand not أرَI see ناراًa fire كالأسىlike grief فيwithin جوانحيmy ribs
إذاwhen نضحتit is sprinkled بالماءِwith water هاجتit rages علىintent on النضجcooking through
And I have never seen a fire like the grief within my ribs:
I have not seen fire in my soul
When sprinkled with water, it rages, cooking me through.
That when doused with water became more inflamed.
أمطْput aside عنكfrom yourself نصحيadvising me فيabout سليمىSulayma فإننيfor I
تبيّنتُI discerned عينthe very essence of الجهلِignorance فيin طلعةthe face of النصحcounsel
Spare yourself advising me about Sulayma, for I
Refrain from my advice in Salim for I
have discerned ignorance itself in the face of counsel.
Have seen the eye of ignorance in the rising of advice.
فماfor ... is not الحبُّlove إلاّexcept سوقُa market of وجدٍlonging ولوعةٍand anguish
عددتُI counted بهاin it خسرانَthe loss of قلبيmy heart منamong الربحprofit
For love is only a market of longing and anguish,
Love is nothing but a market of passion and anguish,
Where I counted the loss of my heart as profit,
Through it I calculated the losing deals of my heart’s profit.
لدىbefore خدّهاher cheek الداميblood-red وماthough no نالهtouched it أذىharm
وياand O عجباًwonder والقلبwhile the heart قدindeed خصَّwas singled out بالجرحfor wounding
Before her blood-red cheek, though no harm has touched it—
By her bloody cheeks—from which nothing has been gained—
And how strange, when the heart alone was singled out for wounding!
How strange! My heart alone was wounded.
يلومhe blames علىfor أنيthat I am سليمٌstung بلحظهاby her glance
سليمٌone free منfrom الأشجانsorrows واللاعجand searing pain البرحexcruciating
He blames me for being stung by her glance—
Blaming me since I was unharmed by her glance,
He who is free of sorrows and fierce, searing pain.
Unharmed by sorrows or wounds that scrape.
يمرُّpasses بسمعيthrough my hearing عذلهُhis reproach غيرnot ناجحٍeffective
كماjust as سمعheard الصمُّthe deaf السّرارwhispers منfrom البحِّthe hoarse
His reproach passes through my ears to no avail,
His unjust rebuke passes my hearing
As the deaf hear whispers from the hoarse.
Like the deaf hearing whispering wind.
ولولاand were it not for الهوىlove لمwould not تذكِkindle أحشائيmy inmost parts الصّباthe east wind
ولمnor would يبكmake weep جفنيmy eyelid ضاحكُthe laughter of البرقlightning باللمحby flashing
And but for love, the east wind would not kindle my breast,
If not for love my youth would not have remembered my innards
Nor would lightning's laughter make my eyelid weep with its flash.
Nor would my eyelid’s laughter weep from a wink.
ولمnor would يكُbe هدبthe lashes of العينthe eye أرشيةَwell-ropes for البكاweeping
وإنسانهاand its pupil يسنيdraws up المدامعtears بالمتحby hauling buckets
Nor would the eye's lashes be the well-ropes of weeping,
My eyes' kohl would not become the page for tears,
With its pupil drawing tears up by the bucket;
Its applicator fashioning tears through friction.

ولاnor ذاكياًblazing لهفيmy yearning ولاnor ناكياًaching قرحيmy wound
Nor would my eye weep, nor my mouth complain,
Neither shedding tears nor complaining, my mouth
Nor my yearning blaze, nor my wound sting.
Nor fancying, my fervor; nor nursing, my wounds.
وليلةand one night وافتْshe arrived والنجومُwhile the stars كأنّهاas though they were
كواعبُfull-breasted maidens بيضٌwhite قدalready تطلَّعنَpeeped out منfrom مسحhaircloth garments
And one night she came—the stars were like
The night came and the stars appeared as if
White, full-breasted maidens peering out from haircloth—
They were white gazelles peering out from their resting place,
بعطفٍwith a graceful figure وردفٍand hips يفضحputting to shame الغصنَthe bough فيupon النقاthe sand dune
ووجهٍand a face وفرعٍand tresses يخجلmaking blush البدرthe full moon فيin الجنحthe night's darkness
With a figure and hips that shame a bough upon a dune,
With a turn and bend that exposed the branch’s inclination
And a face and tresses that make the moon blush in the dark.
And a face and twig that shamed the moon in its orbit.
وسايرهاand kept pace with her بدرُthe full moon of السماءِthe sky منوّراًshining
كطلعةlike the countenance of عثمانَUthman العزيزِal-Aziz (the Mighty) أبيfather of الفتحvictory
And heaven's full moon kept pace with her, shining
The moon escorted them illuminated
Like the countenance of Uthman al-Aziz, Abu al-Fath.
Like the noble rising of Othman Abu al Fatah.
