Breeze of the east wind, tell of those who dwelt among the tamarisks,
The morning breeze, speak of those who lived in Athl,
for you convey tidings of gazelles so well.
For you are good at conveying news of Rayyam.
ولمand never أرَhave I seen أحلىsweeter موقعاًin effect منthan إشارةa gesture
تذكرrecalls عيشاًa life ماhow أمرَّbitter وماand how أحلىsweet
I have seen nothing sweeter in its effect than a gesture
And I have not seen a sweeter place than the gesture,
recalling a life—how bitter it was, and how sweet!
That recalls a life, how enjoyable and how sweet.

O you who blame me for loving them and for love’s beauty,
And O you who blame me for loving them and their beauty,
you blame a thirsty man who longs for water and shade.
Blaming one who desires water and shade.

Your heart escaped sorrows; you would not have been
My heart escaped from sorrows, yet it could not
so quick to reproach me had you borne their weight.
Fear my excuses, even if they were heavy.

لأنكbecause you ماhave not ذقتtasted الصبابةardent longing والتبلاand love’s torment
You think that love is sweet to taste,
And you think love has a sweet taste,
because you have not tasted longing and love’s torment.
Because you have not tasted youth and dissolution.

Welcome, welcome to reproach, for it mentions them;
Welcome, welcome to the blamer for mentioning them,
were it not for them, I would not say, “Welcome, welcome.”
Without them, I would not have said welcome.
وياand oh حبذاhow lovely ليلa night جلوناwe unveiled سلافهits pure wine
فمنso from طربrapture يعتادهthat visits it نثرit scattered الطلاthe wine
Oh, how lovely a night whose pure wine we unveiled;
O how wonderful a night we spent with friends,
so, in the rapture that visited it, it scattered wine.
Where one grows accustomed to scattering pearls from joy.
سهرناwe kept vigil وقدwhile already نامتslept عيونthe eyes وشاتهof its talebearers
فمنso amid لذةpleasure تجلىunveiled ومنand amid قمرa moon يجلىunveiled
We kept vigil while the eyes of its talebearers slept,
We stayed up while their eyes slept,
amid pleasure unveiled and a moon brought to light.
From the splendor that appeared and from the appearing moon.

وخيرand the best لياليnights الدهرof all time ماthose that جمعunited الشملاthe company
A night of joy and bliss brought us together with him,
We gathered in it the night of joy and intimacy,
and the best nights of all time are those that reunite companions.
And the best nights of fate are those that unite kin.

I fear and hope for her whose deeds were cruel
I fear and hope from her wicked deeds,
in shunning me; yet her phantom made reunion sweet.
Repulsions, though her apparition is the best union.

She drew her brows together; then her glances charged.
She frowned her eyebrows then winked her glances,
Imagine, then, a coward who sees the bow and arrows!
So say to the coward who saw the bow and arrows.

أخوa man of وجلfear لوif سلَّّhe drew منfrom طرفهاher gaze نصلاa blade
Nor would submission before calamity be shown
It was not proper for the suitor to plead,
by a fearful man, if he drew a blade from her gaze.
A brother and neighbor, if she drew a sword from her glances.

I melt with jealousy over those tresses
I melt for those locks out of jealousy,
when, in their moments of flowing loose, they toy with her anklets.
When she playfully lets them down sometimes.

Never once did I say to passion and its tyranny,
And I have never said to love and its severity,
“Gently!”—nor to the torment of sickness for her, “Relent!”
Gently, nor did the sickness for her allow any respite.

أضيقI grow distressed بهby him سمعاًin hearing ويوسعنيand he heaps on me عذلاreproach
My greatest worry is an envier posing as an adviser:
And my greatest worry is an envious advisor,
I cannot bear to hear him, yet he heaps reproaches on me.
Who tightens his ears and expands my excuses.

وقدthough already جعلوهاthey have made them بالهوىin love شاهداًa witness عدلاtrustworthy
And a woman judge rules my tears foolish,
And a judge rules to invalidate my tears,
though they have made them a trustworthy witness to love.
When they made her a fair witness in love.
وثقتI trusted بعينيهاin her two eyes فخاناthen both betrayed تجلديmy fortitude
فلاso do not تأمنواtrust منfrom بعدهاafter her الأعينeyes النجلاwide
I trusted her eyes, and both betrayed my fortitude;
I trusted her eyes but they betrayed my endurance,
so, after her, do not trust wide eyes.
So do not trust eyes after them, O limpid ones.

وماyet never ظفرتprospered كفthe hand امرءof a man عشقwho loved البخلاstinginess
I love her stinginess as a safeguard for her beauty,
And I love her stinginess, protecting her beauty,
yet the hand of no man who loved stinginess ever prospered.
And no hand of a lover of stinginess has triumphed.

May God water the ruins of the protected pasture with every downpour,
May God water the ruins of the sanctuary with every downpour,
pouring from the rain clouds—not a sprinkling, nor drizzle.
Not a drizzle nor drops of rain.

And if no cloud lavishes rain on Sa‘da, O Sa‘d,
And if you do not find good fortune, O Saad, a cloud,
then may no land receive rain or bring forth herbs.
That rains on land or sprouts any vegetation.
