وشاعر نكبنا ودّه

وشاعر نكبنا ودّه

يظلم في أحكامه عبده

يظلم في أحكامه عبده

And a poet whose friendship has brought us misfortune

wrongs his slave in his judgments.

قال لهُ يوماً أطبّاؤهُ

قال لهُ يوماً أطبّاؤهُ

والضعف قد جاز بهِ حدّه

والضعف قد جاز بهِ حدّه

One day his doctors said to him,

when his weakness had passed all bounds,

آفتك الأكلُ فقلنا لهم

آفتك الأكلُ فقلنا لهم

وهذه آفتنا عنده

وهذه آفتنا عنده

"Eating is your bane." So we said to them,

"And this is our bane in his company."
