أراكI see you وصفتyou described الروضَthe garden والدَّوحُwhile the great trees واجمٌsilently downcast
وزدتَand you added لماbecause of what عاينتَyou beheld منof خجلِthe blush الوردِthe roses
I see you have described the garden, while the great trees stand silent;
And added more at the sight of the roses' blush.
وأقسمُand I swear لولاهwere it not for it ولولاand were it not for غصونهُits boughs
لكانit would be بلاwithout خدِّa cheek بديعٍlovely ولاnor قدِa figure
And I swear, but for the rose and the garden's boughs,
It would have neither a lovely cheek nor a figure.
وفيand in الروضthe garden نقصٌa flaw واضحٌobvious لكfor you نقدهُits criticism
وأنتand you بصيرٌdiscerning ماinsofar as علمتكI have known you بالنقدin criticism
And the garden has an obvious flaw for you to criticize,
And you are, as I have known you, discerning in criticism:
فنرجسهُfor its narcissus الغضُّtender النَّديdewy طرفan eye مدنفٍone wasted by illness
ومنثورهُand its stock-flowers المنظومُneatly arrayed كفٌa hand بلاwithout زندa forearm
For its tender, dewy narcissus is an invalid's eye,
And its neatly arrayed stock-flowers are a hand without a forearm.
