أمعّنى فيمن هويتُ جهالةً
انظرlook بعينwith the eye of العدلjustice فيمنat the one for whom تعذلُyou reproach
انظر بعين العدل فيمن تعذلُ
O you who torment me ignorantly over the one I love,
I delved deeply into who I ignorantly fell for
look with a just eye upon the one for whom you reproach me.
Look with the eye of justice at who you wrong
أرأيتhave you seen? درياقاًan antidote كذوبlike the liquid essence of رضابهاher saliva
أرأيت درياقاً كذوب رضابها
بعثaroused الصدىthirst وهوthough it is الزلالpure water السلسلsmooth-flowing
بعث الصدى وهو الزلال السلسل
Have you seen an antidote like the liquid essence of her saliva,
Have you seen a glittering mirage whose echoes
that arouses thirst, though it is pure, smooth-flowing water?
Stirred up muddy water that flowed smooth
وكحيَّةٍand like a snake أوor عقربٍa scorpion فيon خدّهاher cheek
وكحيَّةٍ أو عقربٍ في خدّها
أبداًforever يسيءُdoes harm فعالهاits deeds وتقبلyet it is kissed
أبداً يسيءُ فعالها وتقبل
And anything like a snake or scorpion on her cheek,
Like a snake or scorpion whose bite
forever doing harm, yet kissed?
Always does harm though it seems fine
تحيىshe gives life إذاwhen ما(emphatic particle) باشرتshe touches فمthe mouth of عاشقٍa lover
تحيى إذا ما باشرت فم عاشقٍ
وإذاand when تلاحظُshe glances sidelong منfrom بعيدafar تقتلshe kills
وإذا تلاحظُ من بعيد تقتل
She gives life whenever she touches a lover's mouth;
It gives life when it meets a lover's lips
and when she glances sidelong from afar, she kills.
But viewed from afar, it kills
ماnot كنتyou would تنكرdeny معجزاتthe miracles of جمالهاher beauty
ما كنت تنكر معجزات جمالها
لوif أسفرتshe unveiled her face ورأيتand you saw فرعاًa tress يرسلis let loose
لو أسفرت ورأيت فرعاً يرسل
You would not deny the miracles of her beauty
You wouldn't deny the miracles of her beauty
if she unveiled her face and you saw a tress let loose.
If she uncovered it and you saw a branch extended
